Inspiration

In platforms like WeChat or Justdial, users do not stop to think which app to open—they instinctively know where to go. We wanted to bring that same level of convenience and mental simplicity to women-facing services, especially in moments of stress or uncertainty. When something feels wrong, there should be no cognitive burden in deciding what to do next. SheNow was inspired by the idea of a single, trusted place women can rely on—one action, one app, immediate support.

What it does

SheNow is a safety-first superapp designed to act instantly when women need it most. With a single trigger—such as a side-button mapping—the app activates emergency-focused features including passive SOS check-ins, safer walking navigation, and access to essential emergency resources. If a user becomes unresponsive, SheNow escalates by automatically placing calls to trusted emergency contacts and sharing live location context to ensure help is alerted quickly and directly.

How we built it

SheNow was built using a React Native mobile application for cross-platform support and a Node.js backend for authentication, persistent user data, and call-based emergency escalation. The system follows a modular architecture, allowing additional services to be integrated in the future without changing the core experience.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing a long-term superapp vision with hackathon feasibility was our biggest challenge. We also had to carefully design call-based escalation to minimize false triggers while still acting decisively in real emergencies. Creating a calm, low-interaction experience for high-stress situations required multiple iterations across both UX and backend logic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully delivered a focused, end-to-end MVP under hackathon constraints, combining mobile UX, backend logic, and real-time escalation into a single cohesive system. We’re especially proud of designing an emergency experience that minimizes user interaction, reduces decision fatigue, and still responds reliably when a user becomes unresponsive. Building a modular foundation that supports future expansion—while staying disciplined about scope—was a key accomplishment for our team.

What we learned

We learned that building for safety is as much a design and responsibility challenge as it is a technical one. Small decisions around timing, escalation, and user interaction can have real-world consequences, especially in high-stress situations. The process reinforced the importance of reducing cognitive load, scoping features intentionally, and designing systems that act reliably without demanding constant user attention.

What's next for SheNow

Next, we plan to improve reliability, introduce smarter escalation logic, and carefully expand SheNow into a broader trusted ecosystem that can support services such as financial tools, career resources, emotional support, and community access—while keeping safety as the foundation.
