Inspiration
Natural disasters and emergencies can strike at any time. We believe everyone deserves to feel prepared and protected. ShieldKit empowers you to take control of your family's safety by creating a well-stocked and organized survival kit, tailored to each individual's needs.
What it does
ShieldKit was designed to empower families in disaster-prone areas, particularly those with children, elders, or individuals with disabilities. We want to make disaster preparedness less stressful and more manageable, giving you peace of mind in the face of the unexpected.
The application incorporates the following key features:
- Organize with Ease: Create a customized survival kit for each member of your household, considering their unique needs (children, elders, disabilities).
- Peace of Mind: Track expiry dates and receive reminders to ensure your kit is always up-to-date.
- Family Focused: Register family members to simplify organization and communication, especially for those less tech-savvy.
- Adaptable: Add new item categories specific to each family member's needs.
- Stay Alert: Receive timely warnings and reminders about item conditions and approaching disasters.
- Smart Recommendations: Get personalized checklists and suggestions when you add new members to your family profile.
How we built it
For quicker development in given short time frame, we produced a web application for the project. HTML, CSS and JavaScript are used and Django Python framework, Celery tasker and Redis server are leveraged in the project development. Figma is used to produce UI design and Cofluence is used for project management.
Challenges we ran into
Catering to families with children, elders, and individuals with disabilities requires a thoughtful design approach. You might have encountered challenges in ensuring the app is accessible and user-friendly for everyone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Addressing the gap in disaster preparedness: You've created a solution that specifically targets families with diverse needs, including children, elders, and individuals with disabilities. This ensures everyone in the household is considered during disaster preparation.
What we learned
While including many features is valuable, you likely learned the importance of maintaining a user-friendly interface. Especially for users with limited technical experience, a simple and intuitive app is crucial.
What's next for ShieldKit
We're constantly striving to improve ShieldKit! Our future development plans include:
- Educational Resources: Access valuable articles and tutorials on disaster preparedness.
- Marketplace Integration: Easily purchase recommended or missing items directly within the app.
- Evacuation Planning: Create customizable evacuation plans for your family.
- Interactive Maps: See real-time safe zones and danger areas during emergencies.
