Inspiration
Our inspiration was the obvious rise in online shopping during covid-19. According to Adobe, spending on e-commerce in the United States has spiked by 55% in the last two years. While this was helpful for the economy, the impact on the environment has been detrimental.
What it does
Shop Better is a chrome extension that users how eco-friendly and sustainable the practices are of the clothing website they are shopping on. They simply just click on the icon, and a bubble will pop out with a rating from 1 to 5 based on their environmental impact, and reasons for why they got that rating.
How we built it
We used the chrome extension api to build an app that runs in the chrome web browser which fetches the current url the user is visiting. If it's a url that is associated with a site that we have data on, we notify the user with the relevant statistics and overall score.
Challenges we ran into
Finding trusted sources with actual statistics for why certain clothing brands were or were not unsustainable was difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the amount of websites that we were able to make this extension useful for.
What we learned
We learned how to create a chrome extension, and we also learned that many of our favorite clothing brands badly effect the environment.
What's next for Shop Better
Hopefully we can add more features, like giving an environmentally-friendly clothing brand with a similar style relative to whatever website the user is on as an alternative. We also aim to add more websites that this extension works for.
