Inspiration

As college students, TV is our escape from burnout and a way to connect. But the "Golden Age of Television" has created a new problem: content overload. The constant hunt for the next great show and the hassle of avoiding spoilers with friends started to drain the joy out of our primary source of relaxation. We built Trackopotamus to reclaim that joy.

What it does

Trackopotomus is a customizable TV tracker for visualizing your watch progress, discovering new shows through personalized AI-generated recommendations, and logging your personal ratings and reviews.

How we built it

We utilized GitHub to create a React-based web application. We split the project initially into four sections: Snowflake API implementation, TV Maze API implementation, front-end development utilizing Figma and CSS, and setting up the skeleton. Once these steps were mostly completed, we started to merge our segments and worked through merge conflicts and buffed out the last of our formatting and styling issues.

Challenges we ran into

As this was almost all of our team's first hackathon, it's safe to say we ran into a few hurdles! We had a bit of a challenge learning how to implement the Snowflake API within our application to allow users to curate show recommendations specific to them. We also had a handful of different conflicts while dealing with certain merge conflicts on GitHub.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're incredibly proud of creating a functional and accurate recommendation engine from concept to deployment in a short timeframe. Seeing our own watchlists populate and getting genuinely good recommendations from our own system was a rewarding moment.

What we learned

HackGT was a catalyst for growth, both technically and personally. We gained hands-on experience with new technologies like the Snowflake API, Figma, React, AWS, and React Native through interactive workshops. Beyond coding, participating in mini-events and networking helped us bond as a team, strengthening our relationships and expanding our horizons together.

What's next for Trackopotamus

Looking ahead, our roadmap is focused on enhancing discovery and interactivity. Our immediate next steps include implementing a search feature to find shows instantly and adding interactive previews that play trailers on hover. Beyond that, we plan to develop a friends-based social system for sharing recommendations and introduce a "Watch Party" feature for synchronized personal viewing.
