Inspiration

We were inspired by the progression trees commonly found in RPGs and we wanted to share the joy found in videogames while helping students achieve academic success by providing them a platform where the two can work hand-in-hand.

What it does

Similar to skill progression in RPGs, you could progress through various subjects (referred to as "skills" in this case) and unlock more advanced topics.

Additionally, you can undergo specific pathways to deepen your knowledge in a certain field! For each skill, you can add educational sources to help provide more material on that specific subject.

This helps students decide what paths they can take to their STEM career of choice, as we plan to build this 'tree' even further.

How we built it

We mainly built this project using Vue.js as a web app.

Challenges we ran into

  • Got stuck on the paths algorithm for some time
  • Animating the mascot as a .gif for the loading screen
  • Still stuck on paths rendering
  • Problems with skill creation and linking

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Claiming a fitting and affordable domain name

What we learned

As this is the first hackathon for most of us, the grind and work we had to put in was something unexpectedly great but actually fun.

What's next for SkillTree

We will be developing many more features such as:

  • Quizzes to test your mettle and properly check progression
  • AI moderation
  • Leaderboards and rankings for contributions
