Inspiration

40% of the world’s population lives on coastlines. 20% of global protein intake comes from seafood. Yet coastal communities and the seafood industry are plagued with issues. And these complex issues aren’t getting solved because there's no incentive to do so.

What it does

SmallScaleOA creates a circular economy for coastal data to solve these problems. Solving requires tons of innovations that need to work in synergy. SSOA’s laying a foundation for innovation to FLOURISH. By changing the system, SmallScaleOA changes the incentives.

How I built it

SSOA is being built on open-source distributed ledger technologies, and being integrated via interoperable APIs into various data streams, databases, and data analysis platforms.

Challenges I ran into

Choosing the best DLT platforms for each use-case.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Over 10 signed agreements with partners to implement 5 initial use-cases.

What I learned

So much... harmful algal bloom predictions; fish farming insurance structures; mitigation and recovery techniques for coral reef environmental stressors; bomb fishing socio-economic structures in Indonesia; data demands for coupled ocean-atmospheric models for severe weather forecasts; aquatic sensor technology limitations and progress; differences between various mobile fishing apps, networking hardware, and DLT platforms; and more!

What's next for SmallScaleOA

Continuing to build out the platform and implement existing and future use-cases.
