Inspiration

We wanted to provide a tool that improves accessibility to nature in the classroom using Harvard University Herbaria data. Many students in Massachusetts are not aware of the nature around them, and we wanted to make an interactive tool for students to use, so they can learn.

What it does

The dashboard provides two interactive maps that users can use to identify herbaria in their area. The Figma website lays out a specific lesson plan for teachers to use in order to show their students the nature around them.

How we built it

We built a specific lesson plan and interactive website using Figma. We also built two interactive maps using Python for students to use and interact with.

Challenges we ran into

A lot of us come from different coding backgrounds and experience levels, but we were able to collaborate together and create an end product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to create two visualizations and a refined plan for educators to use.

What we learned

We learned so much through the workshops and our project! We have a range of student years (first year to senior) and were able to collaborate on different parts of the project.

What's next for Smith Sprouts

Our project was greatly inspired by virtual museums, and the cool next steps would be to web-scrape street view data from Google Maps. We also had ideas to make mini-games for students to interact with and learn from! We also would like to make our project more accessible (expanding languages past English) and interactive.
