Inspiration

Not only has coronavirus struck the world hard this year, but so has social issues. The Black Lives Matter movement rose into great heights and people globally are revealing new perspectives on these matters. Racial inequality, gender inequality, bullying, and mental health are only a few of various issues that humanity struggles with. Knowing that this idea is a central focus in the world, especially in younger generations nowadays, our team decided to create a website that would aid users with their struggles around these topics.

What it does

Socialief asks users to complete diagnostic tests to help determine the resources needed to guide them. If resources are needed, then the user will have access to them. Otherwise, it will tell the user to spread the message of Socialief and aid others with social issues.

How I built it

Our team used HTML, CSS and JS on repl.it to create Socialief. Most of this website takes up HTML files.

Challenges I ran into

When creating Socialief, there was an issue with linking the button to the correct "Results" page. JS was required to fix this solution, which was difficult for our group due to limited experience we had with that language. There was some difficulties with aligning text, but those were resolved when learning more HTML.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

The website looks visually appealing and is very resourceful. There are multiple videos and even a map marked with nearby services for mental health to help the user. The website has multiple pages, too, making it have multiple paths for the user.

What I learned

Though everyone in the team had some prior knowledge in coding, each member still learned more about web development, especially with JavaScript since we were more familiar with HTML and CSS. We learned how to create the diagnostics with forms and how to transform the responses into a desired output.

What's next for Socialief

Socialief will soon include a point system and a leaderboard. For every piece of advice the user follows, they will earn points. Those with the highest amount of points will become leaders in Socialief (with permission). Socialief's leaders can give advice to other users and lead their communities towards social improvement. Socialief will also focus on more major social issues in order to become more versatile. Lastly, Socialief will likely become an app in the near future.
