Inspiration
We wanted to build something in healthcare, initially debating whether to focus on improving visibility for patients or practitioners. We also explored different hardware formats and sensing methods. The direction became clear when our teammate Charmaine discovered research on gut microbiome acoustics, which sparked the idea behind EcoGut.
What it does
Our prototype demonstrates the user journey of someone experiencing gut-related issues. It shows how a user moves from recording digestive signals, to receiving insights, and then taking action.
How we built it
We started with hand-drawn prototypes and translated them into a high-fidelity design in Figma.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to define a single target audience because the system can function both as a tracker and as a preventative tool. Initially we tried to anchor the product around specific use cases, but we realized the more important starting point was the user’s emotional experience when facing digestive issues. That shift helped us clarify which conditions and scenarios the product should address.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a concept that feels both novel and plausible. EcoGut presents a new way of understanding digestive signals that could meaningfully help people manage their wellbeing.
What we learned
Future projects would benefit from a more structured research process early on to avoid bottlenecks later in development.
What's next for EcoGut
Exploring how this concept could move from prototype to a real, deployable product.
