Inspiration
Our inspiration was to help the people around us. We saw that there was a need for accessible shelter, and decided to do our part to help those in need in our community.
What it does
Some Warmth uses the Google Maps API to help direct users to shelter, and uses Machine Learning techniques to analyze data from previous years, so that we can recommend a place to stay.
How we built it
We used tools like Django to help build the website, as well as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Machine learning was done in both Python and Julia.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was using tools that we'd never had experience with before. Many of us had never used some languages before, and had to develop a working knowledge in less than 24 hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to build a customized and responsive website, along with a robust back-end.
What we learned
From this project, we learned how to work as a team. As well, we developed skills that allow us to pick up and apply tools quickly.
What's next for Some Warmth
We plan on expanding our website to help as many people as possible. Our next target is Alberta.
