Inspiration

Welcome to the soup team, we are a group of first-ish time hackathon students, and so keep in mind the quality of design and code as we also are self aware….

For those with mental illnesses, or struggling with their mental illnesses, it is often hard to gather energy to interact with friends and family. Those who are intensely struggling with their mental health may be a harm to themselves. By offering a less intrusive way for loved ones to inquire about the individual's well-being and possible location if needed. As college students, we often struggle to contact families, so a simple check-in without actual socially interacting was what we intended to achieve.

What it does

The intended format of the chat was to have the friend or family member check It also has other knickknack features such as being able to customize your page, it also has a nifty to-do list, Spotify calming corner where breathing is prioritized, as well as a clock since time is just a concept when you're relaxing!

How we built it

We started with a simple boiler template and made our own layout and adjustments from there on out. We used GitHub and practiced using branches for the first time in our lives. It was somehow exhilarating.

Challenges we ran into

Besides the lack of sleep, and skills: We had merging and GitHub issues at first, but this was because we were not optimizing the platform. As said before, we handled it by adapting and learning new skills and ways to organize ourselves as a new team. In fact, most of our team didn't even know each other before, so that can always be a little awkward at first.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are just glad that we have something to submit at the end of this gruelling 24 hour period. None of us had ever worked on a website before and were completely new to HTML, JavaScript and CSS, but we still managed to get a site up and running!

What we learned

Our group started off with some challenges with how to start working on the vision we had for this project. However, through collaboration and the help of mentors we were able to make our vision come to life! We're extremely proud of the fact that we were able to produce a project that works against the taboo around women's mental health. Being a group of first-time hackathon participants, it is amazing that we got the opportunity to work towards a meaningful cause while expanding our skill sets. We believe this project is a step towards creating conversation and providing the accessibility needed for anyone struggling with mental health.

What's next for sooup

The original idea is to have had this as a IOS widget, with the main feature of simple yes or no safety and assurance questions being its core. Most of us didn't have Apple devices, so carrying out such implementations would have been difficult in such little time. Future Apple store app launch can be expected as it was the main intention. Please refer to the recorded video for further explanation on this.
