Inspiration
We were inspired by real situations where people in danger couldn’t communicate with authorities or the media because of language barriers.
We wanted to create a universal tool where every voice, no matter the language, can be heard, understood, and acted upon.
What it does
SOS Connect helps users in emergencies or witnesses of critical events instantly share their message with the right people.
- In SOS Mode, the app detects location, records video/audio, translates the message, and generates an emergency report ready to send to local authorities.
- In Story Mode, it translates, dubs, and subtitles user videos so they can easily share them with global NGOs through pre-filled email templates.
- Each story can also be permanently verified and timestamped on Solana, creating a transparent digital record.
How we built it
We built SOS Connect using React, Typescript and TailwindCSS for a clean and responsive interface.
We integrated Google Gemini for multimodal AI analysis (transcription, translation, context detection) and ElevenLabs for emotional voice dubbing.
The Solana blockchain was used to generate immutable proof of each shared story, ensuring authenticity and traceability.
Deployment was done on Google Cloud, with asynchronous functions handling AI and blockchain operations.
Challenges we ran into
- Getting accurate location-based language detection for all countries.
- Managing asynchronous AI calls (Gemini + ElevenLabs) without freezing the interface.
- Synchronizing dubbed audio with subtitles for smooth playback.
- Finding a simple yet meaningful way to integrate Solana without requiring user wallets or complex transactions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional, multilingual emergency and storytelling web app in one weekend.
- Seamlessly connected multiple AI services for real-time translation, dubbing, and context generation.
- Designed an accessible interface usable by anyone, even under stress.
- Integrated blockchain technology to bring transparency and digital verification to humanitarian communication.
What we learned
- How to coordinate multiple AI APIs efficiently.
- How powerful Gemini and ElevenLabs can be when used together for global communication.
- How to simplify blockchain usage for non-technical users.
- The importance of designing with empathy, especially for users in crisis situations.
What's next for SOS Connect
- Expanding the NGO database for direct submissions and automated contact by region.
- Adding live translation for real-time emergency calls.
- Deploying the Solana integration on mainnet with user-controlled verification.
- Creating a mobile app version for faster on-site use in low-connectivity areas.
- Partnering with humanitarian organizations to test and deploy SOS Connect in real scenarios.
