SpIdentify

Ever wonder if that shadow in an image is a spider? Fret no more! SpIdentify will tell you using our sophisticated Multi-Layer Perceptron based system whether or not there's a spider in the image!

Inspiration

Our teammate is terrified of spiders and really needs to whether or not to be afraid, therefore we decided to help him out, by forcing him to categorise thousands of spider images to train our program. Now he can rest easy knowing his hard work has paid off and saved others from the same issues.

Challenges we ran into

Optimising the algorithm and image size for spiders. Also needed lots of spider, and non spider, data to train it on which we scraped off the web. AWS activating our account, same with tech domain (made hosting it online difficult.) Android Studio being fickle.

The android app was to send the image to our AWS server, test for a spider and return this to the user.

Most proud of

Getting machine learning in a weekend, managing to make an android app with functionality, making a website and all without experience

What's next for SpIdentify

Feed us more data, and see what we find out! We're hoping to be able to identify various types of spiders and make an extension for chrome to block spiders, for those who have a phobia. This could also be used as a basis for a more sophisticated image recognition software.
