Welcome to SpotShare
SpotShare is a social web app built during Oregon State University's 2025 Hackathon! Created by: Logan Anderson, Dylan Keyhantaj, Ethan Ossana, Aj Paumier
Description
SpotShare is a map-based social platform that allows users to explore the world around them through their friend's experiences. As a user, you can see and interact with points of interest on the map marked by friends, log in and mark favorite spots of your own, leave reviews and ratings (wip) and more. We started with some designs, concepts, and a tech stack in mind and got started right away. The initial concept was a mobile app, which is why we chose React Native over React. We had frequent issues with emulators and dev builds however, which made us pivot to a more web-focused app. We quickly were able to set up a database, add a navigation bar, and a login page. After some issues with dependency conflicts, we were able to add a Mapbox map to the homepage and a new profile tab. We then did more styling work and created an activity page. Through this time, we continued attempting to get the app successfully running on mobile, which we ultimately decided to move past in order to focus on the core map features. Around this time, our lack of sleep began taking a toll, and our progress slowed down. We faced issues with displaying markers on the map within the current map view, and ultimately decided to display the concept through sample data in the code. In the end, we were able to display our markers with a list of friend names. This is among features like reviews, an explore bar, and more proximity features that we plan to further integrate after the hackathon as part of our initial vision. Overall, we learned a great amount about teamwork, our chosen technologies, and how far a little creativity can go.
