Inspiration
Our team was inspired to create an app that would stimulate interest in STEM principles among children under the age of 12. We wanted to develop a fun and engaging digital experience that would also promote the values of diversity and inclusion. Our goal was to create a game that would encourage children to take risks, be bold and creative, and learn about the world around them. The theme of our game, STEMTrek, was "Adventure is Out There".
What it does
STEMTrek allows the user to explore various domains in STEM by engaging with the different rooms and objects in each room. Not only is this engaging and fun, but it's also educational and motivating for children to get more involved in STEM.
How we built it
We used Unity and C# to create STEMTrek, with little to no experience.
Challenges we ran into
Because of the steep learning curve, we hit many challenges which we shouldn't have spent as much time on. For example, our camera views were misadjusted halfway through the project, we struggled with trying to get the program to receive joystick input, and overall struggled with the setup and progression of the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we were able to progress this far given the time constraints and learning curve.## What we learnedBuilding STEMTrek taught us a lot about game development and the importance of the technology industry. We learned that it's possible to create a fun and engaging game that is also educational, and that it's important to make sure that everyone can enjoy the game, regardless of their background or level of technology literacy.
What's next for STEMTrek
STEMTrek is a game that we are proud to have created. We believe that it will inspire children to learn about STEM principles and encourage them to embrace adventure and inclusivity in their own lives. We hope that it will encourage children to think creatively and to explore the world around them with curiosity and wonder. For next steps we hope to make the game more interactive by allowing for controller input and adding more interactive objects and rooms.
