Inspiration
We were inspired by the 'stop the clock' climate initiative in slowing down the detrimental effects to our environment and taking small steps towards creating a better tomorrow. While this responsibility of stopping global warming and saving our world's environment and diverse array of unique and beautiful species seems like a great feet, especially when estimates put the cost of a comprehensive solution at upwards of tens of trillions of dollars, our website aims to make it so that the individual can feel more involved and therefore motivated in their personal efforts towards the huge cause.
What it does
While a few dollars might seem hopeless and trivial in the grand scheme of saving our planet, our website creates an interactive and immersive visualization that people can get excited about donating to our environmental charity of choice, the Worldwide Wildlife Fund. Our website is an informative and interactive platform that revolutionizes the way individuals view philanthropy. Our website encourages users to donate to charity by having the entire interface or environment of our website be thematically designed around a luscious, thriving forest. Overtime, however, like in real forests across the world, due to pollution, global warming, and other adverse effects, the forest environment built into our website deteriorates over time and there is a corresponding environment health percentage. This is meant to alarm the public and get them to spring into action. In the center of the website, there is a donate button that allows users to donate to the charity and reverse the negative affects on the environment so they can see themselves saving the forest and wildlife through our visualization and anyone else can also see that someone has donated and helped the forest, causing a chain reaction. We would hope for this to spark a social community initiative.
How we built it
We used Velo by Wix to make our website and used javascript to create all the animations (Wix animations API from Velo) and visuals. We used Mastercard transaction notification API with Postman to test it and then used javascript to integrate it into our website along with Webhook to receive the notifications.
Challenges we ran into
None of our team members had any real experience with using or implementing APIs so learning how to use insomnia and postman and then javascript to test and implement the Mastercard donation and priceless APIs (which we would not get to work in time) and the Mastercard transaction notifications API which we did finally end up implementing into our Wix website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating an intriguing visualization that we can individually affect.
What we learned
We learned a lot about using Velo by Wix as well as testing and using APIs and different ways to use javascript. We also broadly expanded our skills, knowledge, and experience regarding troubleshooting and teamwork.
What's next for Stop the Clock!
In the future, we would apply the same methodology to other notable causes with different formatting. We would also like to expand our use of Mastercard APIs to include full functionality as well as implementing a monthly installment function and rerouting automated informational emails with payment information to users.
