Street Bites

Street Bites is a platform where customers can find food trucks based on preferences and locations, making it easy to navigate and locate food trucks in an urban area.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind the project is to help small/local businesses and also support the food truck industry. We also know how famous NYC street food is and wanted to incorporate this cultural aspect of the city while also helping food trucks in the process. Furthermore, we want to ensure that people in the city are able to try authentic food and be a part of NYC culture.

What it does

Through Street Bites, users can better navigate and find food trucks and not feel overwhelmed or stressed by choices in urban areas. We also help food truck owners attract more customers, additionally supporting small businesses in the process.

How we built it

We used MySQL to build tables in the database to keep track of users/owners, food truck information, and also preferences(tags). We used PHP to create login & registration information and to also display all of our data. We used HTML, JavaScript, and PHP to make the map and display the markers. Finally, we used CSS to style elements and make sure everything was consistent with our color palette and logo.

Challenges we ran into

We had challenges with finding food truck API because we realized that the documentation did not have JSON data. We also had difficulties with updating our database. Finally, we had difficulty with the geocoding API because some of the latitudes and longitudes weren't matching up to an actual address.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of figuring out the marker feature on the map, and also we are proud of our logos and design. We believe our platform is very user friendly and easy to use.

What we learned

We learned how to make a map using Leaflet.js. We also learned to use xammp, and we learned how to use the geocoding API.

What's next for Street Bites

We will be making a recommended for you page which ask users for rating so we can give them a recommendations page when they return. We also want to offer deals by collaborating with various food trucks to get discounts on meals. Finally, we also plan on expanding and want locations of food trucks around various urban cities.
