Inspiration
As a college students, we sometimes find it difficult to find in-person events because our school and other organizations in our area don't rely on centralized forms of communication. We rely on a mix of conventional websites, social media, and word of mouth, so we wanted to create something to take some of the hassle out of that process.
What it does
The app helps students and other individuals find events in their area that align with their interests (and budget!).
How we built it
We used JavaScript, HTML, and CSS with React to build this web app. Additionally, we utilized the @react-google-maps/api library to implement core functionalities within the app, and the @react-oauth/google to implement basic user authentication with Google accounts.
Challenges we ran into
This is the first time for some of us working all alongside each other on the same files. It took a while to get into the rhythm of using Git. Additionally, thinking about the specific conditions we needed to input to our AI to train it took some time. As we worked we had to keep tweaking the inputs to the AI chatbot to get our desired results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is the first time we have used APIs since it is a technology we do not utilize for our academic projects. Being able to learn a completely new technology in such a short amount of time gave us confidence. We are also really proud of the turnaround time of identifying a real-world problem, coming up with a practical solution that all of us would use, and building a working demo.
What we learned
We learned how to use Google Maps API. In terms of soft skills, we learned a lot about teamwork and how to delegate tasks. Being in a big group of 4 we learned how to incorporate everyone's ideas and input. Some of our teammates used Git for the first time and learned about good software development practices.
What's next for Street Compass
Further Integrating AI functionality into the app to improve the user experience. We would also like to improve our backend.
