Inspiration
Studium – the latin word for 'Study'. The idea for Studiumz was born out of a deep understanding of the struggles many students face when they lack a supportive learning environment especially to connect with like-minded peers who share common interests. According to the latest data, at least 30 million children and teenagers in Indonesia are internet users, and digital media is currently their main choice of communication channel.
With these insights in mind, we set out to create Studiumz as a safe and supportive space for young individuals from various educational backgrounds to connect with each other. By fostering a sense of community and shared experiences, we aimed to empower students to learn together, collaborate on skill development, and achieve their common goals.
What it does
Studiumz brings known concepts together with a new format to connect students and fostering a strong sense of community. With its focus on peer-to-peer learning and skill development, Studiumz stands apart as an innovative platform for students from various educational backgrounds. Studiumz leverages Cohere AI, an intelligent matching algorithm to analyze user profiles and interests to suggest potential study partners who can complement each other's skill sets and offer valuable insights into academic challenges.
Upon joining the platform, users create profiles that highlight their interests and academic struggles. Users can share their interests and academic struggles on their profile cards. If a user clicks the "match" button on one of the profiles they find interesting, an invitation is sent to that user. Once an invitation is sent, the recipient has the option to accept or decline the invitation. If both users mutually agree to connect, a match is made, and the doors to meaningful conversations swing open with using the chat feature. They can share their academic goals, discuss areas where they require assistance, and offer support to their study partner. The app places a strong emphasis on fostering collaborative learning experiences, allowing users to learn from each other with their respective peers and collectively enhance their skill sets.
How we built it
In a fast-paced 36-hour hackathon, our team came together to build Studiumz. We first divided our team into specialized roles: front-end and back-end. The front-end also took charge of creating the app's visual identity and user experience. Using Figma, they designed simple wireframes and high-fidelity designs to ensure a user-friendly interface. The back-end engineer focused on building the core functionality of Studiumz. For this purpose, we chose Golang as the backend programming language due to its efficiency and performance. The most crucial aspect of the app's functionality was the matchmaking system, with a recommendation algorithm powered by Cohere AI. Additionally, we integrated Firebase authentication to allow users to log in using their Google accounts, ensuring a secure and convenient login process. For the front-end development, we utilized Next.js, a popular React framework known for its speed and server-side rendering capabilities. Once the back-end and front-end were complete, we deployed the back-end on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to ensure reliability and scalability. For the front-end deployment, we opted for Vercel, a cloud platform that offered seamless deployment and hosting solutions.
Challenges we ran into
During the development of Studiumz, we encountered several challenges that tested our team's creativity and adaptability. The first hurdle was brainstorming and conceptualizing the core idea of the app. We aimed to create a platform that had a "wow" factor and offered a unique value proposition to the users. This required extensive brainstorming sessions and careful consideration of the features that would make Studiumz stand out from other social and educational apps. One of the major technical challenges was integrating Cohere AI into the app. As it was our first time working with this particular AI technology, we needed to familiarize ourselves with its functionalities and capabilities. Additionally, the time constraint of the hackathon was a significant challenge. With only 36 hours to develop the app, we had to work quickly and efficiently to implement the various features and ensure a seamless user experience. This fast-paced environment demanded effective communication and coordination among team members to keep the development process on track.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
Technical challenges that have hurdled us every step of the way were the ones we're most proud of tackling. From the database design and learning new tools like Cohere AI, we're happy to say despite not knowing much at the start we've done and learnt so much. Our team is particularly proud of how Studiumz has brought the vision to life. Bridging the gap between the initial concept and the final product required extensive dedication and coordination. We worked tirelessly to ensure that the app's features aligned with our vision of empowering youth through peer-to-peer learning and skill development. What we learned:
Throughout the development process, we learned the importance of community-oriented platforms and the power of peer-to-peer learning. We discovered that when given the right environment, young people can uplift and inspire each other, creating a ripple effect of positive change. We also learned about the significance of incorporating safety features and maintaining a supportive atmosphere to foster a healthy community.
What's next for Studiumz:
Moving forward, we plan to introduce new features to enhance learning experiences, such as virtual study rooms and interactive educational content. We also hope to introduce newer formats to allow study groups to connect with each other Our vision is to see Studiumz become a global hub for youth empowerment, connecting young minds and fostering a passion for continuous learning and personal growth.
