Inspiration

We realized that it is really difficult for Madison residents to post or find subleases. Postings are always scattered across Facebook, Snapchat, Discord servers and even Craigslist. Currently, there’s no trust, no verification, and no easy way to handle payments or agreements. We wanted a single platform to address all these issues and improve sublease financing too.

What it does

Sub2Lease is an end-to-end subleasing platform that lets Madison users:

Browse verified, map-based listings
Chat instantly with renters
Sign secure agreements
Handle payments safely
Message renters to negotiate prices in-app without the need for giving contact info
Manage the entire subleasing flow in one place. It replaces chaos with clarity
Basically, this is like an AirBnB for subleasing, built for Madison students with hopes of making the currently stressful housing situation easier

How we built it

We designed a full-stack system with:

A relational backend model for users, listings, messages, and agreements deployed on Render
Smart contract based agreement and payment system configured with USDC and ETH to make finances easier and reliable by storing them on-chain
Smart listing filters and geolocation through interactive Madison map
Secure agreement creation and acceptance flows
A clean, responsive frontend for posting, browsing, messaging and payments
Everything integrates seamlessly via well-defined REST endpoints.

Challenges we ran into

Designing an agreement workflow that feels legally meaningful but simple for students
Ensuring payments and user verification are both secure and easy
Building a map-based search that works across inconsistent address formats
Structuring clean message threading between users

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A complete subleasing flow, from listing to payment to signed agreement
Reliable message and notifications system
A verified user model that reduces scams and no-shows
A modern, intuitive UI that makes subleasing feel effortless
We were able to design and ship an entire website addressing all the issues mentioned in the inspiration, all within the hackathon period

What's next for Sub2Lease

We have already shipped a crude MVP, we can flesh it out even further with these features: Adding identity verification for extra trust Integrating automated rent reminders and scheduling Supporting mobile apps for iOS and Android Expanding beyond Madison
