Inspiration

When looking for their first job, Junior developers face a lot of blockers, the main one is "lack of experience", being developers ourselves and going through the journey of finding our first job in tech, our inspiration is helping junior developers around the world gain experience with real projects that can validate their knowledge when looking for jobs.

We were inspired to help other bootcamp grads like ourselves land great jobs at tech companies by removing the obstacle we faced when we started our careers in software engineering: companies wanted experience, but the only way we could get it was by showing them our skills.

After we landed jobs in tech, we tried to help founders and startups recruit developers, not just by looking at resumes, but by matching our schoolmates with companies as part of their final projects.

What it does

SUMIL connects companies looking for talent with junior developers looking for experience in real projects.

How we built it

For the MVP we made a landing page on strikingly to showcase the product, what it does and some of the companies projects. We build the mockups on Figma and created an API to manage company's, developers and projects information.

Challenges we ran into

Our first challenge was to find the core value proposition of the project, then modifying the vision to not only benefit developers but also to benefit companies, last and biggest one, find a quiet place to record the video we needed to upload XD

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The first accomplishment is an app everyone we know can use, an app that can help people come together through code, and that is both impactful for developers as it is for companies.

We learned new technologies and managed to use existing ones to accomplish a landing page, mockups and the backend in less than 24 hours.

What we learned

1. Junior developers from different countries go through different process when looking for a first job, but they all need experience in order to get it.

2. Junior developers from the US usually do 2-3 internships before leaving college

3. Junior developers from Latin countries don't do internships before leaving college resulting in less experience when looking for a first job.

4. Companies struggle to validate the knowledge from junior developers and most companies rely on the academy, college or bootcamp reputation.

What's next for SUMIL

SUMIL can evolve to be a collaborative open source code platform, a place where eventually developers will join not only to gain experience but to have fun working on new projects. And it can evolve to be a talent pool platform that companies will use to hire all level of developers based on experience.
