Inspiration
Our inspiration came from many different sources, including games like Mario vs. Donkey Kong and World of Goo. We wanted to use the theme "Connect" and interperet it in a connecting water droplets together to be able to gain more powerful abilities.
What it does
In Sutra, you play as a small water droplet looking to water the flower at the end of the level. Your special ability is being able to grow and launch yourself by connecting with other water droplets to gain mass. This provides an interesting gameplay mechanic as if players are able to get big enough, they can launch themselves practically anywhere in the level.
How we built it
Our team built this using the Godot engine and GDscript. We used Aseprite for our drawings and artwork, and sources our sound effects from open source archives online.
Challenges we ran into
As this is only our second time using Godot for a group project, we still have a lot to learn. Things like signals (Observer patterns that call methods on activation) were tricky for our team to implement well. We also are working virtually, since aren't able to drive down to Albany for the weekend, so another challenge is missing out all the fun!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is very proud of our planning and coordination for this Game Jam. We spent the whole night from right after the theme was announced creating game ideas, establishing our repository, writing out game mechanics, and creating a Trello board to use throughout the Jam. This planning proved invaluable, as it never seemed like anyone was ever out of a job to do. One month ago in October, our team participated in a 48 hour game jam and set the scope of our project far outside what we could have ever completed. This time, we had the perfect sized project, the perfect plan, and executed it incredibly well.
What we learned
As this is our first ever 24hr Game Jam, we learned skills in rapid development and planning. We also sharpened our skills in Godot development and pixel art drawing.
What's next for Sutra
This may be the end for Sutra, but it will not be the end of our team and working with Godot. Sutra was a fun project, but I think we all have more complex game ideas we'd like to turn into a reality. We will be undoubtedly creating more games for future game jams, and documenting our experience on our itch.io page.
