Inspiration
Pediatric hospitalization has a close personal connection to each of us as members. After conducting research we realized the lack of resources in this sector and we wanted to provide a connection for children that are disrupted from their normal lives for an extensive period of time. Robin, research-based emotional support, invented by Karen Kkhachikyan designed was a new project that was created to ease anxiety and loneliness among children in hospitals and clinics. Children reported a 29% increase in positive affect and a 33% decrease in negative affect after a visit with Robin. Robin, however, lacked accessibility for more children and demographics. And that's where Teddy Tech comes into the picture. Teddy Tech is every child's AI partner during their stay in the hospital to create a friendly and interactive community. Robin proves the demand and needs for Teddy Tech's features.
What it does
The purpose of Teddy is to provide a more comforting and educational experience for 5-13-year-olds during their stay in hospitals. Provide an explanation of medical terminology in simpler jargon. A comforting experience through a human-like conversation between Teddy and the patient through day-to-day conversations. A collaboration between hospitals and Teddy tech to provide the best care for patients. Teddy can access information such as name, age, gender, and reason for hospitalization to best answer questions and connect with their child pal.
How we built it
The main tool that was used to create the voice chat feature is Dialogflow- a platform that integrates conversational AI to allow developers to create chatbots and voice assistance. That was then used to create a pre-recorded call implemented in the Canva presentation.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges we encountered during this hackathon were using all the new tools(DialogueFlow, Twilio, Resemble) to create the conversational AI, as well as attempting to generate custom audio. Due to the time constraint and experience, we had to figure out a way to implement our product without the need to code. During our research we found out that there is an AI robot that implements the same features as our project, this caused difficulty for us since we had to find a way to differentiate our product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
All of our team members were beginners in the coding atmosphere with this being our first-ever hackathon. However, even with this challenge, we were able to create a project with real-world impact.
What we learned
We had to learn numerous new technologies we never used before as we advanced in the hackathon. One of the main technologies we had to learn is Google's cloud Dialogflow to create a conversational AI.
What's next for Teddy Technologies
Add different types of games and connect peer to peer to distract them from the hospital environment or to make them feel they are not alone. By adding a feature where they can connect to people with similar interests, such as reading and watching anime, in the hospital to create a support group. We later also want to create educational games in teddy tech for children to play and learn more about medicine.
