(TW Sexual Harassment/Assault)
Inspiration
The inspiration for this project was after the disappearance of Sarah Everard on the 3rd of March and the finding of her body on the 10th of March. Her murder sparked discussion up and down the country on women's safety which also occurred around the time up a UN report was released stating that 97% of women aged between 18 and 24 have been sexually harassed. This figure is extremely saddening but not surprising due to the abysmal levels of sex education and resources available in the UK. Sexual abuse is also rife within UK schools and even when reported largely goes untouched and perpetrators rarely feel the consequences of these actions.
What it does
This website aims to provide an anonymous way in which individuals can share their experiences of sexual harassment whilst in the educational stages of their life. It takes the perpetrator's school and these reports will be emailed to the heads when submitted (whilst remaining anonymous) to make them aware of what students at their schools are doing. It is hoped by also publishing these testimonies on the website that the schools will be unable to shy away and will be forced to take action in order to prevent situations like these happening again in the future. However, it mainly is here to provide a safe space for anyone who has been sexually harassed and make them aware that it is not their fault and they are not alone in this situation. Everyone copes with trauma differently and we hope that this website allows survivors to gain some comfort in knowing that what they went through will not go under the rug as we will ensure that the relevant people will see these testimonies!
How we built it
The website was built using glitch as the platform and html and css were used to develop it and add design aspects. Here is the link to the code https://glitch.com/edit/#!/the97percent?path=README.md%3A1%3A0
Challenges we ran into
The most difficult part was displaying the testimonies. I know I wanted them to not be static on the page but really struggled with coming up with something that would allow that. My first thought was using a marquee but I persevered and managed to code the slider which I'm really pleased with!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I've never competed in a hackathon solo so it was a steep learning curve but I'm glad I stuck with it as my final product is something I'm both passionate and proud about! I learnt how to manage my time, make sure I didn't give myself too much to do, come up with an idea with no one to talk to about it and correct any issues/bugs by myself.
What we learned
Creating a one page website, I'd never done that before so I learnt how it differs from a multiple page website which is what I'm used to and the pros and cons of coding either one for use.
What's next for The 97%
I would like to add an additional page where there are resources for survivors and also a quiz in order to educate the users what consent actually looks like in real life situations maybe not covered in a school setting. This is something that could really be implemented and something that I have yet to see in the real world despite it being such a good way to address a huge issue. I hope to continue developing it after the hackathon has finished.
