Inspiration
As an International student moving on my own for the first time, it was really difficult navigating the city. The stress of maintaining my academics along with balancing my personal life took a toll on my health. If I had some sort of platform or website that could give me instant tailored answers to questions like, "How do I apply for a health card?", "Where is the nearest hospital that takes walk-ins?", or just "How do I effectively balance my personal life with academics?", would have helped me a lot in first year.
What it does
ThriveThreads is a platform that allows the user to use the AI-powered Chatbot to ask questions related to health care. The Chatbot will give an instantaneous answer for the user. Additionally, the question will be posted onto a thread board where other users can answer. One feature ThriveThreads has is a translate option so that anyone can followup a discussion no matter what language they are in. This way, users are able to see different answers in different cultural perspectives too!
How we built it
We built ThriveThreads' UI using React.js along with Cohere's Language AI API for the Chatbot and translation feature. We also used Figma to create the protoype.
Challenges we ran into
Our team has never used React before so we were unsure how we can maintain the version control of the project and prevent merge conflicts. Additionally, Cohere's API was difficult to connect to at first and setting the state properly so that the text could display instantaneously was a challenge as well.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are so glad we successfully implemented Cohere's API to do two tasks including the AI chatbot and also the translation feature. Learning React was also very fun and a great experience.
What's next for ThriveThreads
Initally we wanted to use MongoDB for our back-end but unfortunately it was difficult to connect and set up everything within the time span of the hackathon. We'd like to incorporate it later so that we can have other features like filtering out data within the platform. Also, we'd like to have scraping from other paltforms like reddit, university student service websites, and more. This way, we'd have more information for the user to get comprehensive advice.
