Project Ticketye: Empowering Ethiopian Farmers through Technology

Inspiration

Our journey began with meeting Ato Khade, a 58-year-old soybean farmer from Oromia, Ethiopia. Despite his dedication, he faced four critical barriers:

  1. Exploitation by middlemen
  2. Lack of market access
  3. Risk of crop failure
  4. Invisibility to international buyers

His story inspired us to build a system that returns power, profit, and dignity to smallholder farmers.

What We Learned

We discovered that effective solutions must integrate:

  • Cultural accessibility(local language support)
  • Technical trust(verifiable quality assurance)
  • Economic immediacy (direct market linkages)

The digital literacy gap required us to translate technology into actionable knowledge through localized training.

How We Built Our Project

We developed an integrated three-pillar platform:

1. B2B Digital Marketplace

  • Direct connection between farmers and BRICS buyers
  • Elimination of intermediary exploitation
  • Transparent pricing mechanisms

2. Blockchain Traceability System

  • Unique QR codes per product batch
  • Immutable record of quality metrics
  • Story-based branding connecting consumers to farmers

3. Localized Agri-Tech Hubs

  • Training in Amharic and Oromiffa
  • Digital literacy programs
  • Sustainable farming techniques

Economic Impact Model: The income improvement for farmers can be represented as:

$$ I = n \cdot (p_d - p_t) - C $$

Where:

  • $I$ = Total income increase
  • $n$ = Number of farmers
  • $p_d$ = Direct sale price
  • $p_t$ = Traditional exploitative price
  • $C$ = Operational costs of tech hubs

Challenges Faced

  1. Digital Divide Overcoming technological barriers in rural communities through visual training modules
  2. International Compliance: Meeting complex export regulations through strategic partnerships
  3. Infrastructure Limitations: Adapting to intermittent connectivity and power availability

Future Vision

Our model creates sustainable value:

  • Short-term: Leverage China's 2025 soy import approval
  • Long-term: Expand to premium products like coffee at 200% price premiums
  • Impact: Create over 100 tech-enabled jobs in rural areas while promoting gender equity through women-led cooperatives
