Inspiration
After being unable to implement some other complex ideas, we settled on fixing a common problem most pedestrians face in the cold. Traffic lights take too long to activate.
What it does
This ultrasonic sensor allows for traffic intersections to track the distance to cross, and adjust the traffic lights based on the user's distance.
How we built it
We used the Arduino UNO kit along with the ultrasonic sensor and a few LED lights. The preliminary part is the the sequential lighting of the colored LED's, to replicate the behavior of traffic lights.
Challenges we ran into
The first challenge we overcame was connecting the modules on separate files, but being unable to combine them into one without corrupted data. This was accomplished using a modified connection module and some programming principals.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A sensor controlled lighting system is unlike anything our group members have created. It was exhilarating Seeing a tangible assortment of LED's working based on user input.
What we learned
New skills in breadboarding, and working on an engineering problem in a collaborative environment.
What's next for Traffic Light Efficiency
The next steps include a more robust system of displaying the information about oncoming vehicles. One way this could have been achieved is by using an LED Matrix to generate a countdown, stop and walk symbols, e.t.c.
