Inspiration
When I found out that more than 11.5 million people in the world have dyslexia I was very surprised, and I kind of felt like I needed to do something to help people who have dyslexia. This is when Tration was created.
What it does
Tration is a chrome extension that helps people who have dyslexia read. There are plenty of features that Tration has which can help people who have dyslexia. One of these features is a font changer, which will change the text of a website. Currently, Tration has 5 different fonts to choose from. All these fonts have been scientifically proven to help people with dyslexia read. People with dyslexia also find it hard to concentrate. Because of this Tration has a built-in ad-blocker and an image-blocker. This helps people who have dyslexia focus on the text. Some other features Tration has is a background color picker and a font color picker. Here you can select a color for a background or font and once you have selected a color you can then hit the change color button and the background and the font on the webpage will be changed. This feature helps people with dyslexia see the text better if it is not very visible and also having a color that a person likes on a webpage can increase their concentration. In addition to that, Tration has a letter spacing tool where someone can change the spacing of text on a webpage. Studies have shown that letters that are more spaced out help people with dyslexia read. There are two more features that Tration has. One of these is a text to speech feature where someone can take a paragraph, put it into Tration and the computer will read it for them. Finally there is a built in dictionary which allows a user to search up a word they are unfamiliar with and they can then see the definition of the word and how it is pronounced. Due to time constraints I was not able to show how to load the extension into chrome (since it is not part of the chrome webstore). To load it into chrome go to the github link in this submission and read the README.md file.
How we built it
I used Sublime Text 3 to program the extension. For languages of code I used HTML, JavaScript and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
I found it hard to create this chrome extension because this is my first time creating a chrome extension and I was unfamiliar with how to build one! But more specifically, I spent a long time figuring out how to manipulate a webpage (ie. change the font, background colors etc.).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Considering this is only my second hackathon I was very happy with the program I built especially given the time constraints!
What we learned
I learned a lot about the three languages of code I mentioned before (HTML, CSS and JavaScript). Furthermore, I learned how to create a working chrome extension in just 3 days!
What's next for Tration
In the future I plan to add this into the chrome web store so that way the installation process is very easy. I also would like to somehow make this a mobile app for Android and IOS.
