Inspiration

We took inspiration from the beloved canvas-switching trend on social media, where friends, family, and couples get together to create and share collaborative artwork. As creatives ourselves, we sought to create an experience that included the same fun physical feeling doodling provides, and the inherent connection of doing so with someone else. In addition, we sought to digitize the warm nostalgic feeling of putting up your artwork on the fridge -or elsewhere in your childhood gallery- now available on your home screen where you can see it every day.

What it does

UIDraw is an app where two people can connect via code to draw on individual canvases and then swap them with the other person by physically swiping the canvas up as many times as they'd like until satisfactory. Timers and swap limits are available for convenience- or the challenge! Once complete, doodlers can save and share their artwork on their UIDraw profiles and phones. These doodles can also be displayed on the home screen through widgets.

How we built it

We sketched up a rough look in Procreate and then built the app itself in Figma. Graphic assets such as doodle examples, profile pictures, and icons were designed using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Challenges we ran into

The major challenge we faced was the Figma learning curve, as we are all beginners. In addition, we struggled in the ideation process and nailing down specific services that the app would include.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of our resilience in learning Figma and our quick adapting abilities that allowed us to innovate and make the most of our current skillset. We are also proud of how efficiently we worked and communicated as a team throughout the design process!

What we learned

Something we learned is that the component tool and auto layout are our new best friends. In addition, it's important not to get stuck during the ideation process and simply go with the flow.

What's next for UIDraw

Down the line, UIDraw hopes to expand its connection ability to include randomized canvas-swapping and offer a larger selection of tools to reflect the physical and artistic process. We would also like to build the social aspect of the app: likes, comments, stickers, etc. Finally, we would like to add sound effects.
