Inspiration

The inspiration for this project comes from the pressing need to address urban homelessness, food insecurity, and the lack of sustainable practices in urban areas. Recognizing that homeless shelters are pivotal in providing support to vulnerable populations, this initiative aims to enhance their role by integrating sustainable community gardens. These gardens are designed to not only provide fresh, nutritious food to shelter residents but also to serve as a model for environmental sustainability and community engagement.

What it does

The project introduces sustainable community gardens into homeless shelters. These gardens use vertical farming, hydroponics, and aeroponics, optimizing space and resources for growing a variety of produce. The gardens are equipped with automated irrigation and sensor systems for efficient resource management. A smart waste management system using IoT technology composts organic waste, which is then used to enrich the garden soil. This approach creates a sustainable cycle that benefits both the shelter residents and the environment.

How we built it

The project was developed through a collaborative process, involving initial assessments of potential shelters, securing funding, and forming partnerships with agricultural and technological experts. Training programs were designed for shelter residents and staff to manage and maintain the gardens. The gardens themselves were built using modular designs to accommodate the varying spaces available in different shelters.

Challenges we ran into
