Inspiration
There were some old multiplayer maps I played in Quake that were a combination of a deathmatch level and a funhouse. That combined with our interest in horror and comedy.
What it does
You spawn in a lobby where you have no weapon. You enter the carnival grounds through a teleporter. At that point you are given a laser gun. You can search the grounds for a more powerful weapon, the grenade launcher. At this point the evil clowns are spawning and searching for you. You can explore the different tents. Each one has a different feature. One is a low gravity tent. One has a spinning vortex. One features moving platforms. There is also a decorated funhouse with some jump scares and pendulum traps. You can also use the launch pads to jump higher so you can get on the tops of the tents, or you can use scaffolding to climb to the roof of the funhouse.
When you die you are briefly jailed in the lion's cage, where you are taunted by a goofy plastic lion.
How we built it
Konstantin did the art. Amir (Virtual Destructor) did the scripting.
Challenges we ran into
Mainly the slowness of the Horizon Desktop Editor. There were some bugs. We were able to work around them though. Also toward the end before submission (just before I wrote this) we started running into a lot of issues where we couldn't play.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The world is quite fun and atmospheric. It still needs some work but we are proud of it, and will continue to develop it further. We have only been working on it for 3 weeks.
What we learned
How to do a lot of different things in the Horizon editor, and implement common game features in the engine. Konstantin got quite good at the asset import process.
What's next for Unfunny Funland
More weapons! More humor. More traps. Two carnival rides. One more enemy type. Playtesting and promotion.
