Inspiration
In the day and age of online learning, one of the most difficult experiences to have are random encounters with students on your campus that can lead to life-long friendships. Students often reported feeling lonely or isolated from their peers as a result, with no easy avenues to reach out and meet a variety of people with different interests.
Our solution
Our web application, UniFam aims to combat this issue and encourage social connections, by having users sign up to be placed in a "Family" group which rotates each week. The end product of this application will see users able to self-assign themselves a specific "family role", with others in the family able to award points for positive contributions to the family. The current prototype displays a static view of what this could potentially look like.
One of the struggles of remote learning is a lack of motivation to participate in online social activities such as these. However, much like a hackathon, we believe that it is easier to form friendships and encourage participation if a group shares in a common goal to work towards. This is where our "Project" aspect comes in. For each Family rotation, the group is assigned a simple collaborative task themed around mental wellbeing, which is shared with the broader community when a rotation ends. Our prototype showcases one potential activity: working together to build a collaborative playlist with the weekly theme of "productivity". Other "Project" activities we wish to implement include a photo-wall showcasing highlights of daily walks (encourages exercise and outdoor activities), and a collaborative painting centered around certain themes each week (encourages teamwork and "family" bonding).
The theme of "Family" was chosen to emphasise the sense of community that we believe that university peers were lacking during the extended period of time where physical distance made it very difficult to feel connected with other students. We hope that UniFam can combat this and help make lasting connections~
