Inspiration

Picking a course/unit can be hit and miss when you only have the general information from the handbook. Currently, there is no dedicated platform for students to hear feedback or even ask related questions to fellow students. Meanwhile, compared to graph-styled course maps, handbooks might not be intuitive enough, at first sight. It could be time-consuming to understand their whole structure, especially regarding the satisfaction status of multiple prerequisites of units.

What it does

UniMaster is an open platform for ALL current and future students, giving intuitive and most recent access to all course plans and unit reviews of all Australian universities. In this way, students are more likely to choose/organise a course/unit that is most suitable for them, especially for new commencing students. The graph-styled course map we designed helps students intuitively organise their course structure and plan future courses in the most convenient and efficient manner. Meanwhile, students are also encouraged to add feedback for their courses and learnt units. The feature of liking and saving for reviews is also provided. When students get new questions, they can also comment on the post so that the community can help them solve the problem.

Technologies we used

Figma is used for building the prototype.

How we built it

UniMaster prototype is built on Figma. If you would like to try it out, please follow the link below and click on the play button on the top right hand corner to start.

Technical innovations we implemented

Our platform is designed to be dedicated and integrated so that students are no longer required to find feedback that is scattered all over the internet, not to mention some feedback was in Facebook groups or discord servers that require you to join. This way, it is much more convenient to hear about other students’ individual study experiences on the units or courses and decide if it is suitable for you. The format of the review section is also designed as a forum to encourage interactions between fellow students and can be used as a newly emerging media for all university students.

What we learned

Through this project, our teamwork and design skills were enhanced. We learnt how to work effectively with each other from different backgrounds and how to use collaborative tools to solve problems together.

Challenges we ran into

Due to time constraints, we were not able to implement the actual web application. This is because the first step of building a website is to design the style and aesthetics, which is why we spent all our time polishing the Figma file. We believe that the implementation can be much easier if we have a solid design foundation.

What's next for UniMaster

We would like to implement this Figma prototype into a real web application. We would also add a monitoring system to make sure the forum is free from hateful comments.
