Inspiration
The inspiration for this app was the disastrous effects of climate change that the world and our community are facing. Our community has personally suffered through several enormous wildfires in the past and faced yearly droughts that have also greatly impacted our community. I hoped to write a program that educates the community in an enjoyable way on how their community could be built in a clean way.
What it does
Players are given an empty field and various blocks to build their civilization. They must add sources of clean energy, including solar panels and wind turbines, to power the city. They can also add buildings mines, and nature. Additionally, they will obtain a score detailing the city's energy efficiency, citizen satisfaction, and GDP.
How we built it
I used the open source game engine, Godot, to create the game with scripting in C++.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge that I ran into was how to make the app or code into an interesting project that would allow the user to enjoy their experience while also learning valuable information about our topic. Another huge challenge I went through with the development of this app was how much information to use and include. This was troublesome to figure out since I struggled with balancing the different aspects of the game. I wished for the game to be both informative and also something that would attract a lot of attention from a younger audience since they are the ones who will have the power to change the future.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud that I was able to put the project together and learn something new with my limited experience.
What we learned
I learned how to implement my beginner-level knowledge of C++ with a game engine to make the game.
What's next for Unlimited Power
If possible, I could add more recent technologies and developments as well as other features that judge the user's civilization on how much of an impact their creation has on the wildlife and nature. I'd also add other features such as a tracker that informs the user about how much of a difference their clean energy sources are making compared to their old starter civilization.
