Inspiration

Nowadays, people live disengaged from their physical community. They have issues creating ties with those who live close to them. This not only makes coexisting challenging but it eliminates very important support networks and community help. They feel indifferent and insecure about their community and its future. They expect changes but they have no idea how to make them happen. We, Vecindar seeks to better and to unite the community by providing a platform to create and fund collaborative projects.

What it does

This mobile application facilitates and promotes community project creation. It lets anyone view important projects in their specific community. Thirdly, we would work as a non-profit by managing the money transactions using ATH móvil and creating ties with workers and employers and buying materials. We are essentially establishing a democratic way of financing community projects. In addition, we are promoting the use of unused community spaces.

How we built it

We built an iOS app using Swift and Parse as backend as a service. We worked together to come up with solutions for the design of the app. We motivated each other to keep going until we had a product we were proud of.

Challenges we ran into

It is an ambitious project and a big part of it was figuring out the legal and financial aspect of the application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to come up with an idea with the potential to better connections in communities and make them better. Also, we finished our first hackathon and came out with knowledge, motivation and incentive to create more.

What we learned

It was our first hackathon. We learned so much while having fun. We learned our limits and capabilities. We learned how to create something from scratch in a quick but effective way.

What's next for Vecindar

After this hackathon, we want to push forward this project. We need a website and an android app. We feel a commenting section would be beneficial and some search features. Also we need a way of visualizing the progress of a project before it's completed. Partnering up with an association with a goal like this would be ideal, we are open to collaborating to someone who has the same vision of better communities in Puerto Rico.
