Inspiration
As we are all students in University taking online courses during this pandemic, we feel like the interactions with our peers have been going down. As we work remotely from home, there is a lack of social interaction and traditional community results in a decrease of motivation. From our classmates, we hear a strong demand for libraries with friends, which are not always possible at this time. Here, we offer a solution to bring students together, and the classroom setting that many students crave.
What it does
Our virtual campus project is designed to tackle digital education, with the goal of bringing students together. We used CSS/HTML/Javascript/React to create a web interface where the character in the game can walk around the virtual campus and enter a building. The virtual campus is a UofT map in the background of the interface. Next, we will show a demo of our game.
How we built it
We used CSS/HTML/Javascript/React to create a web interface where the character in the game can walk around the virtual campus and enter a building.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we had is with react where we were unable to transition from one map to another. We had to split the map and the moving character.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of learning react and game development during this hackathon.
What we learned
We learned that front-end technologies can be used to creat games.
What's next for Virtual Campus
Our next step for our project is to introduce multiplayers and users-interaction, so that students can have more interactions with their pairs. Also, in the library, we are thinking of implementing a meeting/room API so that people can create meeting and have their friends join, as well as a library room, just like our campus library.
