🗣️ Voicenary: Talk to AI Characters. Learn Languages the Fun Way!

💡 Inspiration

Language learning is often boring, repetitive, and... let’s be honest, kind of lonely. 😴
We wanted to change that. So we thought:

"What if you could actually talk to AI-powered characters — like a French chef or a Spanish teacher — and they talk back to you in real voices?" That idea became Voicenary — an AI-powered language companion where conversations feel real, characters have personality, and you learn by talking, not just memorizing.

🔊 What it does

Voicenary lets users:

  • 👨‍🍳 Choose an AI character (like a French Chef, Spanish Teacher, or Korean Actor)
  • 🧠 Hear them speak using realistic ElevenLabs-generated voices
  • ✍️ Type your replies and get real-time feedback
  • 🌟 Learn new words and phrases through short, themed dialogues It's like Duolingo meets ChatGPT — but way more fun and with personality!

🛠️ How we built it

The app was built in 4 days by a team of two — frontend and backend magic coming together:

  • 🧩 Frontend: React.js with TailwindCSS (for a playful Gen-Z-friendly UI)
  • 🔁 Routing: React Router for smooth page transitions
  • 🗣️ Voice: ElevenLabs Text-to-Speech API for generating character voices
  • 📦 Data: Hardcoded conversations for now (but flexible for future expansion!)
  • 🌐 Deployment: Hosted on Netlify for easy access and demo We used modular components, reusable character cards, and minimal design so we could focus on making the voice + chat loop work smoothly.

🧗 Challenges we ran into

  • 🧠 Making the AI voice feel natural — balancing personality with clarity
  • 🕒 Limited time — we scoped the project carefully to keep it hackathon-friendly
  • 🔤 Matching user responses — handling small variations ("I like pancakes" vs. "I love pancakes") was trickier than expected
  • 🔐 API security — ElevenLabs required us to manage our keys carefully

🏅 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • 🎙️ Smooth integration with ElevenLabs — the voices sound amazing!
  • 💬 Fun conversation flow that actually feels like a mini language lesson
  • 🧑‍🎨 UI that’s friendly, clean, and themeable (light/dark mode ready!)
  • 🧩 We scoped the project well and shipped a complete working version in 4 days

  • 🗂️ Add new conversation packs (Travel, Food, Shopping, etc.)
  • 🌍 Expand to more languages and regional accents
  • 📱 Mobile version!
