Inspiration

  • We decided to build a volunteering that can track both quantitative and qualitative aspects of volunteering - both the tangible and intangible. Ground Up Initiative's activities centre around sustainability and are very human-centric so we decided to provide a platform to track user participation via total hours contributed and total participants. We also want to hear from volunteer testimonials to hear their stories from volunteering.

What it does

Our Application allows volunteer organisers to manage and track metrics of their volunteering events easily. Volunteers can log in and and submit hours contributed for after an event, as well as provide a short write up about their experience and feedback. They can also optionally contribute a photo of their event.

How we built it

We used Next.js as our main web development frame work and Pocketbase for our backend. We started with figma mock ups of the main pages of our site and used tailwindcss to build up our UI. We iteratively developed and tested our solution consistently over the 2 weeks.

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges making our User Interface more dynamic, especially for our user line graph statistics. We also had to learn how to integrate our front end as pocketbase was lacking documentation in some areas. We had tight deadlines to meet and struggled juggling our school work with this project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Its the first hackathon for some of us and we are proud that we've learned so much from tinkering around with pocketbase. We are also proud to have a functional, meaningful application deployed

What we learned

We learned how to coordinate and designate work to each other. We learned quickly what each of our strenghts and weaknesses were and played them to our advantage.

What's next for VoluMeter

Things we can further work on are keeping track of more metrics such as carbon emmissions saved from the volunteer efforts. We also think there is value in creating a comprehensive form builder so that allows for more user customisation for different types of events.
