Inspiration
It was supposed to be the perfect morning: Lighthouse Park, sea views, forest trails, a peaceful start to the day. My wife and I had planned it all out.
But when we arrived, the parking lot was full. Overflowing. No nearby options. We circled in frustration until we finally gave up and drove home, disappointed and silent.
That drive back hit hard. I realised how fragile our travel plans really are. How a single bottleneck can derail everything. That's when I decided to build PathFlip.
What it does
PathFlip is an AI-powered travel planner that doesn't just map your perfect trip. It generates smart backup options for every single activity. Whether you're exploring the Scottish Highlands or soaking up sun in Costa del Sol, PathFlip ensures you're never stuck. Car rental falls through? Here's a scenic train pass. Museum closed? Try this hidden gem instead. Your adventure keeps flowing, no matter what.
How I built it
I built PathFlip using tools I'd never touched before: TypeScript, Leaflet for interactive mapping, Supabase for real-time data storage, Google Places API for location intelligence, Netlify for hosting, RevenueCat for premium subscriptions, and Gemini AI to power the smart backup generation.
It was a steep learning curve, but that's where bolt.new came in. It gave me a clean, focused environment to ship fast without distractions. Within days, I went from rough concept to working prototype with a polished UI featuring interactive maps and AI-generated alternatives.
Challenges I ran into
The hardest part? Making smart backup generation both efficient and reliable. I had to fine-tune the AI prompts and scoring algorithms to ensure alternatives were genuinely helpful, not just random nearby places. Each backup needed to match the vibe and purpose of the original activity while offering something uniquely valuable. Balancing API calls, response times, and quality required constant iteration.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I built something that doesn't just help people plan. It helps them adapt in real-time. The AI-generated backup system with ratings, pricing, and contextual descriptions (like "no driving stress in bad weather" for train alternatives) makes pivoting feel natural, not forced.
What I learned
Good travel isn't about everything going perfectly. It's about maintaining momentum and excitement when things change. I learned that giving travelers confidence through smart alternatives, complete with ratings, costs, and compelling reasons to try them, transforms potential disappointments into unexpected discoveries.
What's next for PathFlip
Next up: live availability checks, weather-triggered backup suggestions, and community-sourced hidden gems. I want PathFlip to feel like having a local friend in every destination. Someone who always knows the perfect Plan B, C, and D.
