Inspiration

Being highschoolers, we found ourselves constantly stuck in our desk studying, participating in extracurriculars with school, or having fun with friends. Because finding community service is such a hassle and we have a lack of time and resources, the amount of community service within our daily lives started to shrink and the connection between us and our community was practically nonexistent. Therefore, we created WEB, an easy app that connects teenagers to their community in a few clicks.

What it does

WEB allows volunteer coordinators to readily access volunteers by simply creating a new event. This event is immediately accessible to all volunteers on a easy to use map where they can sign up. WEB also personalizes each and every account to cater to one's preferences by prioritizing those volunteer opportunities that fall into one of their interests.

How I built it

We built our app using android studio, gupshup, wix, and eclipse. For the app, we implemented a few android studio benefits, but mainly stuck to our handtyped java. Gupshup, we coded the entirety in a foreign language to one our team, javascript. Wix, mainly for promotional services, highlights the features and uses for our app.

Challenges I ran into

Android studio, itself, was a challenge. It continued to present various challenges throughout the night. Our biggest challenges consisted of learning the syntax and style of Android studio, access data across activities, permanently storing data and dynamically adding features of Android Studio. As with gupshup, our team member responsible for gupshup had absolutely no experience with javascript.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of && What we learned

We are proud of our app because it is all of our first time using Android Studio. We learned the entire basics and a large amount of the language in one night. We are extremely proud that we were able to debug despite our lack of knowledge and experience with this platform. We also learned the basics of javascript as we coded gupshup.
