Inspiration
Imagine racking up over $1,000 in parking tickets simply because you violated the overnight street parking rule. I came from a small suburban town near Chicago, IL that has pretty strict parking rules. For some families like ours it was especially a problem. We had two cars, but a one car garage. Fortunately, my neighbor had four parking spaces so we negotiated a monthly rent and she’d allow me to park there.
There are many others who share my frustrations with parking. The village collected over $7M last year in parking tickets and fees.
But now, with advancements in Decentralized Physical Inventory (DePiN) there’s a better way.
I’m excited to introduce WePark. WePark is a peer-to-peer network of shared parking spaces.
Think of it like AirBnB for parking.
What it does
WePark is a network of parking spaces where guests can view real-time availability and reserve a space. Each space contains details about the features and amenities of this space, such as EV charging, or a space big enough for an RV.
If you own property like a parking lot, a vacant piece of land, a garage or carport, you could add it to the network and monetize your space.
Parking for a WePark guest offers a superior experience. Rates are typically more affordable, you’ll find parking easier with more available spaces because the availability is real-time.
Each space is highlighted with available amenities such as parking for RVs or accessibility features. If you have an electric vehicle, the network can tell you if your space has EV charging. It can even get granular details like the connector type, the speed of charging, and if the charging station is working.
How we built it
For this hackathon, we’ve prototyped what the WePark experience could be:
We built four key components that drive the WePark Network:
WePark Network: Think of this as the property owner. They can list a single parking space or a whole parking lot with this smart contract.
WePark Membership: Think of this as a guest membership card. With a membership guests can park anywhere on the network for a low rate.
WePark Space NFT: Each space is individually recorded and amenities are tracked here.
PARK Token: The native token for the WePark Network used for payments
WePark DAO: WePark is governed by a DAO. Holders of the governance token can vote on proposals and make changes to the WePark Network. The DAO is responsible for making decisions about the network's future.
For this hackathon, we built a whole website and purchased a parking lot to test it out.
On our homepage you’ll learn about WePark and how it benefits everyone.
On the About page, we go into more detail about the technologies we’ve implemented such as Lisk Layer 2 for fast and and low cost transactions on the scalable optimism superchain. Nobody wants to wait for parking information, so we we’re excited to include Gelato’s Web3 functions to take some tasks off-chain. We’re using three services in our membership monthly renewal,
We believe in transparency so on our website, we’ve created a page to show all the transactions happening on our network
The DAO member page is a prototype of what DAO members would see. The can make proposals, vote on them and view their dividends.
To Join WePark as member or property owner, you can do that from a single page
And lastly, we wanted to demonstrate how quickly parking transactions run on the network on the simulator page.
Challenges we ran into
This being our first app on the Lisk L2, we weren't sure what to expect. There was a bit of nervousness around using Gelato because none of us had ever used it before. After a while, we quickly caught on and became confident in the tools.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are super proud of what we've built. Making something that has real-world utility and helps our community has always been in mind. Showing that we can scale this and go nationwide, even globally is even better.
What we learned
Learned that there is a lot of testing involved. We've learned that you don't have to reinvent the wheel, there are a lot of existing services from Gelato that make automation simple. We built our smartcontracts first and then remade some of them simplified because Gelato took the complex parts out.
What's next for WePark
We will continue to build WePark, especially since we purchased an actual parking lot. During the development of the idea, I pitched it to a few friends who also own spaces and vacant lots and have expressed interest in joining the network. We really believe this is going to be something big.
