Inspiration
We created a platform that connects university students with top-rated tutors at their own institutions. Our inspiration came from our own struggle to find available tutors through the university registry and feeling disconnected from them. We took an online marketplace-style approach to provide an easy and effective way for students to find and connect with tutors. Our platform simplifies the process by allowing students to read reviews and ratings and make informed decisions about who to work with. Our goal is to help students succeed in their academic pursuits and empower them with quality education.
What it does
Through a few simple steps, WiseWing matches students up with tutors who have gone through the same curriculum at the same school. Scheduling, payment, and communication can all be done in one place through the app. Students can look through tutor profiles and get to know more about each tutor's teaching style and experiences. Our review system promotes integrity and professionalism between student and tutor in addition to assisting students in their search for a tutor.
How we built it
Our group was highly motivated to create a project, despite our limited experience with languages and frameworks. To bring our vision to life, we turned to Figma as our primary technology. Figma allowed us to design and build a prototype of our project before we began coding, enabling us to explore and experiment with our ideas.
With Figma, we were able to carefully craft each frame and design the behaviour of each interaction. This allowed us to create a highly functional prototype, complete with dropdowns and transitions between pages. We took full responsibility for ensuring that every decision we wanted to demonstrate had a corresponding screen to move to.
In short, Figma provided us with the tools we needed to create a cohesive and polished prototype that accurately represented our vision. Despite our limited experience, we were able to create a successful and impressive project with Figma.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was with the time constraint; what parts of the app should we focus on, and what should we leave as a concept?
Using Figma also introduced new challenges, even outside of the learning curve. For each decision the user makes, new frames must be manually created for each potential choice, which compounded our problems with the time constraint.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As creators of a tutor finder app concept, called WiseWing, we are proud of the several notable accomplishments achieved. One of the primary accomplishments is designing a user-friendly platform that is easy to navigate and has a clean interface, making it accessible to all users.
Another significant accomplishment is coming up with the concept for the app that offers universities from across the country the ability to provide customized course content for the app. With this feature idea, universities can add specific courses to the app, tailored to their specific curricula, which students can access and use as a supplementary resource for their studies. At the same time, students gain access to a wealth of course-specific material, which can improve their academic performance and help them achieve their academic goals.
Additionally, we are proud of creating a prototype that allows users to adjust their bookings based on their availability.
The concept of WiseWing stands out in a competitive market, providing an excellent resource for students who need academic support.
What we learned
In addition to learning to use Figma, this project was the first time many of our group members worked on a project of this nature collaboratively, and we had to learn to work together effectively.
We explored UI/UX design; considering which layout and designs would be the easiest for the user functionally and visually. With multiple people working on the design at once, we had to learn to work with a consistent design language. Additionally, we learned to leverage design principles, as well as colour theory.
What's next for WiseWing
The next steps for WiseWing involve completing the backend of the app to ensure that it functions smoothly and efficiently. This would involve refining and optimizing the algorithm that matches students with tutors, as well as addressing any technical issues that may arise. Additionally, the app will continue to expand its reach by partnering with more educational institutions and universities.
To achieve this, WiseWing plans to conduct targeted marketing campaigns to reach more students, promote the app's unique features, and establish itself as a leading provider of personalized academic support. The app also plans to establish partnerships with educational institutions, universities, and other organizations to expand its reach and offer more resources to students. By collaborating with universities, WiseWing could access a wider pool of potential users, and offer a more diverse range of courses and academic support.
Another important next step for WiseWing is to improve the user experience by adding more features and functionalities to the app. This may include features such as a more user-friendly interface as well as enhanced communication tools to make it easier for students to interact with their tutors.
