Inspiration

In this fast-paced society, the strive for success has been eating our time and energy. We bend over backwards and squeeze our calendars to do more and conform to our standards of success. Eating becomes less of a priority. Personally, we absolutely love food and believe that we shouldn’t have to sacrifice what we love to accomplish other things in life. Food lies at the intersection of all parts of life: culture, tastes, personality, artistic expression, physical and mental health. We believe that something that has such a potent effect on our lives should be celebrated. We wanted to create a stress-free food app that deviated from a regular dieting app. We emphasize users' feelings with the food, not the calories!

What it does

Yummi is an individualized digital space to record the food journey of users. We want to help capture yummy experiences for users with their meals for them to look back later. In Yummi, users can create an entry for any food or meal that they eat and rate their ‘yum’. They have the option to write an entry description and add a photo to their Yummi gallery which serves as a visual collection of their ‘yums’. Each rating is out of 5 ‘spoons’. Each number of spoons correlates to a certain shade of color, 5/5 spoons being the darkest and 0/5 spoons being the lightest. The shade of color correlated to the rating can also be shown in the user’s Yummi gallery, allowing them to quickly recall the entry and how they rated their ‘yum’.

How we built it

We created a high fidelity prototype using Figma.

Challenges we ran into

With the concept we came up with, there are so many features that we could do yet so little time. Due to lack of experience, it was hard for us to scope the design that is realistic and achievable in this limited time frame. After talking to Sabrina and Julie, we were able to come up with a feasible scope that we can accomplish in this designathon. Another difficulty we had was accessing the flow of Yummi. Creating a flow was a foreign idea to us. Working with our mentor Emma was incredibly helpful in terms of simplifying our flow and narrowing down our goals for our prototype.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are both designathon, product design, and figma beginners. Despite the lack of experience, we tried our very best to use our current tech knowledge, past partnership experience, and new learnings to accomplish a realistic goal.

What we learned

Where to begin! Through creating Yummi we had the pleasure of working with such knowledgeable and supportive mentors. They helped us navigate the Figma platform, simplify our ideas, and focus on our capabilities. We learned the most about basic design skills, consistency, perseverance, and not being afraid to ask for help when it’s needed.

What's next for Yummi

We would like to add color scheme options in order for users to personalize Yummi. Since the current model exhibits warm colors, other versions could explore cool tones or jewel tones. In the future, we hope to add a social media feature so users can interact with friends and see what others are eating. A map feature can also be added for users to record their food journey based on location.
