Overview
Welcome to the CLEAR documentation! Here you will find all the resources you need for building with CLEAR.
Identity is foundational to building trust online in the digital space. CLEAR gives you the confidence you’re only engaging with verified, human users to create safer experiences and reduce fraud. By verifying with CLEAR, consumers join millions of existing CLEAR members who avoid friction and save time with a single, portable identity. By engaging these verified users, CLEAR partners experience increased adoption, trust, and operational efficiencies.
Product Overview
What is CLEAR
CLEAR is a secure identity platform that enables real-time verification of users across industries. Our technology combines device telemetry, personal information, document scanning, biometrics, and authoritative source corroboration to confirm that a user is who they claim to be.
CLEAR provides the assurance needed for high-trust workflows — from workforce onboarding to healthcare account creation — while keeping the user experience seamless and consistent.
How CLEAR Verifies Users
CLEAR uses multiple layers of verification to build confidence in a user’s identity:
-
Device telemetry
- Captures device fingerprints, IP reputation, and risk signals.
- Helps detect anomalies such as unusual geolocation or suspicious device behavior.
-
Personal information
- Users provide key attributes (e.g., name, date of birth, phone number, email).
- Attributes are cross-checked against authoritative sources.
-
Document scanning
- Government-issued IDs are scanned, validated for authenticity, and compared against user-provided data.
- Ensures the document has not been tampered with or expired.
-
Biometrics
- Face scans and selfies are used to confirm liveness and match against the document photo.
- Provides biometric assurance that the person completing the flow is the rightful owner of the document.
-
Source corroboration
- Information is checked against trusted databases (e.g., credit bureaus, watchlists, healthcare registries).
- Confirms that provided identity data exists and is consistent.
By combining these checks, CLEAR creates a layered identity profile that is secure, repeatable, and trusted.
Networked Identity
CLEAR’s identity model is networked: once a user has successfully verified with CLEAR, they can be recognized and trusted in future interactions across the ecosystem.
This benefits both partners and users:
- Faster onboarding — users who are already verified don’t need to re-enter all their details.
- Reduced fraud risk — PSUID (persistent CLEAR identifier) links verifications across contexts.
- Consistent experience — users see the familiar CLEAR flow wherever they engage.
First-Time Verification
The first time a user verifies with CLEAR, more information is collected to establish a strong identity record:
- Personal information (name, date of birth, phone, email)
- Government-issued document scan
- Biometric capture (selfie/face scan)
- Device telemetry and risk signals
- Source corroboration against authoritative datasets
This establishes the user’s PSUID — a persistent identifier that links all future verifications to this verified record.
Repeat Verification
On subsequent visits, the verification process can be streamlined:
- PSUID check — ensures the returning user matches the identity established previously.
- Biometric confirmation (e.g., face scan) — verifies the user is the rightful owner of the PSUID.
- Reduced friction — fewer steps compared to first-time verification since core identity is already proven.
Partners can configure how much friction to apply on repeat verifications, balancing user convenience with security needs.
CLEAR Verification Differentiators
User Verification
When users encounter a “Verify with CLEAR” button – they know the experience to follow is secure, intuitive, and consistent. CLEAR provides benefits beyond that of a typical partnership; our trusted brand is positioned alongside your own, encouraging users to prove their identities & share data with your app.
CLEAR provides partners the optionality to integrate with web apps, native iOS apps, and native Android apps. The user experience can be broken down into two distinct flows:
- Previously Verified. Users who have previously used CLEAR’s services experience this flow. Partners may configure the integration to request additional information beyond what the user has on file with CLEAR.
- First-Time Verification. For users who experience CLEAR’s service for the first time, we provide a straightforward enrollment flow to verify their identity. This experience unlocks a single, reusable identity that can be easily applied across multiple use cases.
Consent & User Data
In keeping with our Privacy Commitment, CLEAR will always obtain express consent from a user before sharing their personal information with one of CLEAR’s partners for the first time. CLEAR requires that partners request the minimal data attributes necessary for their use case, subject to Security and Legal approval before production launch. This ensures a transparent & trustworthy experience for end-users.
Users may be prompted to enroll or to supply additional information (such as their driver’s license) if requested by the partner and not already on file with CLEAR.
If the user consents to share, partners will have access to the user's traits in the CLEAR dashboard and via API.
Key Takeaway
CLEAR provides multi-layered verification to establish a user’s identity and then leverages networked identity to make repeat verifications faster and more secure.
- First-time verification establishes trust with strong checks and issues a PSUID.
- Repeat verification builds on that trust with streamlined steps, protecting both partners and users.
