Adjust Cover

The Adjust Cover action allows for resizing and/or changing the image format of embedded cover art.

You can choose between Original, JPEG, and PNG image formats where Original just keeps the image format of the embedded cover.

Quality specifies the target quality of the image.

If Size is enabled, the image is resized using the given size in pixels and one of the given strategies:

max. size treats the given size as the possible maximum width and height in pixels of the embedded cover image. If the cover is smaller than the size provided, the size of the cover is not changed.

Importing Tags from Online Tag Sources

Mp3tag allows for importing tags and cover art from online databases — Discogs and MusicBrainz by default — via Tag Sources → Discogs and Tag Sources → MusicBrainz. The last used Tag Source can be triggered by Ctrl+I.

Tag Sources → Covers lists Tag Sources that import cover art only.

The import works on a per-album basis and is usually a 3-step process. Please note that the search works on a per-album basis and is not automatic. Mp3tag doesn’t auto-magically detect unnamed files and tags them correctly.

These configuration options are affecting audio formats which are using ID3v2 tags (currently MP3 and TTA).

Read

The order below, is the order in which Mp3tag reads different tag formats (that means that displaying APEv2 tags is prioritized over displaying ID3v1 tags). Mp3tag only displays the contents of one tag format at a time. The read tag format is denoted in the Tag column of the File List.

Rename Files based on Tags

Renaming files, creating folders and complete directory structures from tags can be done by using Convert → Tag - Filename with a format string. The format string is used to describe the structure of the desired filename.

Besides using normal placeholders (such as %artist%, %title%, …) and arbitrary text (e.g., Music) it also allows for separating folders with the backslash \ character.

The Tag Panel is the sidebar on the left of the File List that shows the fields to enter metadata. Besides the standard fields, you can add user-defined tag fields to the Tag Panel via Options → Tag Panel.

Mp3tag comes with a basic set of Tag Sources but it’s not limited to those.

Over at the Mp3tag Community Forums, you’ll find a plenitude of other user-contributed Tag Sources that allow you to import ALL data from Discogs, access Bandcamp or Beatport or import lyrics to your files.

You can explore (and download) them at the Tag Sources Archive.

To use a user-contributed Tag Sources, you need to copy its files to the configuration folder.

Local freedb

After the discontinuation of freedb, accessing local freedb databases is only possible on historical snapshots.

You can enter the path to your local freedb database here. Please note, that accessing the database based on the audio files is not available at local databases. You’ll need to create a local index if you like to use the text search option on local freedb databases.

These configuration options are affecting audio formats which are using APE tags by default (like Musepack, Monkey’s Audio, WavPack, …).

Read

ID3v1 If enabled, Mp3tag reads an existing ID3v1 tag.

APE If enabled, Mp3tag reads an existing APEv1 or APEv2 tag.

If both, ID3v1 and APE, are enabled, Mp3tag first reads an ID3v1 tag and after that the APE tag.

Case Conversion

The Case conversion action allows for changing the upper and lower case of the selected Field.

Supported conversions are:

lower case changes all characters to lower case.
Mixed Case changes the first character of each word to upper case and all other characters to lower case.
Sentence changes the first character of the string to upper case and all other characters to lower case.
UPPER case changes all characters to upper case.

Words begin after any of specifies characters which mark the beginning of a new word.

Import Parts of the File Name to the Tag

Importing tags from filenames and directory names can be done by using Convert → Filename - Tag.

The format string describes the structure of the name to import from. It is built of either standard text (e.g., Music), placeholders (such as %artist%, %title%, …), or backslash characters \ that denote folder structures (optionally starting with a drive specifier e.g., D:\).

User-defined field mappings

Mp3tag displays tag fields either directly with their corresponding name from the files (e.g., for files with APEv2 tags like Musepack or VorbisComments like OGG and FLAC) or uses a fixed mapping from format-specific names to human-readable names (e.g., for ID3v2 identifiers or MP4 atoms). For example, the ID3v2 field TPE1 is mapped to ARTIST in Mp3tag.

Convert Codepage

If you have problems displaying tags with characters from other charsets (like Cyrillic) in Mp3tag, the tags are probably stored in a system codepage instead of Unicode or ISO-8859-1.

To convert these tags from a specific codepage to Unicode, select the appropriate tag field(s) and choose the codepage from the drop-down list.

Import Tags from Text Files

Importing tags from text files can be done by using Convert → Text File - Tag. You can choose a specific file from your local drive, or you can use a format string for the filename in case it should be derived from the first selected file.

The structure of the text file is basically one line per file. So the first line would contain the tags for the first file, the second line the tags for the second file, and so on.

The File List lists all the files that are loaded either via File → Change directory... Ctrl+D, drag and drop, or via the context menu from Windows Explorer.

ID3v2 comment language code (ISO-639-2)

Different programs require ID3v2 comments to be written with specific language code identifiers. Mp3tag’s default is eng, but depending on the language of your Windows installation, you might want to use the ISO-639-2 code of this language so that comments are displayed in Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player (e.g., deu for a German Windows installation).

Rearrange Parts of File Names

Using Convert → Filename - Filename, you can rearrange parts of file names by marking up to nine parts using a pattern over the file name and rearrange them using a new file name pattern.

The Old filename pattern splits the file name in several parts. It is built of standard text (e.g., Music and delimiters like -, _) and by placeholders that denote the reusable parts, starting at %1, %2, up to %9.
You can mark directories via the backslash character \ within the pattern string.

Saves the embedded cover art to the relative or absolute file name specified by the format string.

You can use fixed text like cover and placeholders like %artist% and %album% in the format string. The file extension is automatically appended based on the mimetype of the image.

If Export only covers of type is enabled, only covers of the chosen type (e.g., Front Cover) are exported.

If Export duplicate covers is enabled, identical covers (same name and content) are exported.

Copy and Compose Contents from Tags

Using Convert → Tag - Tag, contents of tag fields can be composed by other fields content. This converter can also be used for copying the content of one tag field to another tag field.

There are two special field names, _FILENAME and _DIRECTORY, which target the file name and the directory name, respectively.

You can use Format Strings and Placeholders and Scripting Functions as format string to format the content of the specified field.

Sometimes you might want to omit some information that should not imported to a tag field. This can be done using the %dummy% placeholder for the unneeded part of the source.

If only as whole word is enabled, Mp3tag replaces Original only if it is matched as whole word and not as part of a word. In addition to whitespace characters, word boundaries are defined by any of .,;:!?.

If case-sensitive comparison is enabled, Mp3tag replaces Original only if it is matched using the same upper and lower case.

Set Cover Properties

If you set the type to < keep >, the existing cover type is preserved.

Split Field by Separator

Caution: Applying this action to all tag fields at once may produce unintended results. If you use a common separator character (e.g., /, |, or ;), it may also affect fields you did not intent to modify.

Mp3tag provides an internal Web Sources Framework which is parameterized through web sources description files.

Using these description files, you can import tag data from theoretically every web site which displays artist/album information via HTML (no JavaScript or PWAs) or provides an API via XML or JSON.

Mp3tag uses format strings in various of its features to describe the structure of file names and imported data. A format string is built of either standard text (e.g., Music), placeholders (such as %artist%, %title%, …), or backslash characters \ that usually denote directory structures (optionally starting with a drive specifier e.g., D:\).

Format strings are used in two ways in Mp3tag, matching format strings and generating format strings.

Matching format strings are used for simple pattern matching of existing strings, e.g., file names to import tags from or lines in a text file that describe tag contents to be imported.

Mp3tag offers various built-in scripting functions, which can be used at various places in the program.

These functions offer advanced display and converting options and are to be used in combination with format strings and placeholders.

Wherever a string parameter can be used, a generating format string can be used and is evaluated before being passed as parameter to the scripting function. Nesting of scripting functions is also possible.

Note that characters with special functionality apply. This implies that you can enclose parameters in ' to pass them as raw text without parsing. Functions with variable parameter count (e.g., $replace) are limited to < 64 parameters.

This dialog allows for adding, removing, replacing, and reordering of embedded cover art in one or multiple files.

The first column of the cover list shows the status of the cover, where a full circle indicates that the cover is embedded in all selected files. A half-filled circle indicates that the cover is only present in the number of files that is displayed below the status icon.

You can reorder one or multiple files via the Move up and Move down buttons and via drag and drop.

You can edit these tag fields via View → Extended Tags..., add user-defined fields to the Tag Panel, or add user-defined columns to the File List. All listed fields FIELDNAME can be referenced via a placeholder %fieldname% in format strings.

Searching the File List is available via Edit → Find... Ctrl+F. To search the current list of files, simply enter text in the search field and press the Find button. It searches all tag fields and the filename part of the file path for the given criteria.

If you want to reduce the contents of the File List, please have a look at Filter.

There are multiple search strategies, namely:

Contains: The default search strategy, where the given criteria can occur somewhere.
Matches Word: The criteria must match as a complete word.
Matches Content: The criteria must match as a complete tag field or the filename.
Begins With: A tag field or the filename must begin with the given criteria.
Ends With: A tag field or the filename must end with the given criteria.
Regular Expression: A tag field or the filename must match the given regular expression.

Each of the search strategies can be combined with the Case Sensitive option to enable case sensitivity when matching the criteria.

The manage list dialog is used to manage entries of drop-down lists that automatically collect previously used input, e.g., filter expressions or format strings. It can be used to add, duplicate, edit, remove, and reorder such entries.

It’s currently available via the format string helper menu of the filter input field and for the format strings of the converters Tag - Filename, Filename - Tag, Text file - Tag, and Tag - Tag.

MusicBrainz updated their server to a new search infrastructure and with that, some minor changes to the MusicBrainz tag sources were necessary.

Extended Tags

The extended tags dialog available via View → Extended Tags... Alt+T allows for viewing and editing all supported tag fields and cover art for individual files and multiple files at once.

If the dialog is shown for a single file, the window caption shows the displayed and included tag format and the file name of the current file. In this case, the buttons << and >> allow for the navigation to the previous and next files in the File List without leaving the dialog.

Mp3tag supports .m3u playlists and .m3u8 playlists (UTF-8 encoded, supports international characters in file names).

Loading Playlists

Playlists can be loaded via File → Load Playlist/Cuesheet....

After loading a playlist, Mp3tag lists its contents in the order they appear in the playlist. Because of internal design decicions, duplicate references to the same file are not listed in Mp3tag’s File List.

Exporting Tag and File Information

Each export uses an export configuration that describes the format that is used and the contents that are exported when running the export function. An export configuration serves as a template for the export.

The Export List shows the available export configurations. You can activate an export configuration by selecting it. This export configuration is then used when running the export command.

The Filter available via View → Filter F3 allows for searching files that meet a certain criteria (e.g., the file name contains specific characters or a tag field has a specific content).

To filter the File List simply start typing in the filter field. As a result, all files that contain the specified filter string in their tag or file name are listed in the File List.

If you remove the filter text from the filter field, the original unfiltered list of files is listed in the File List. The same also happens if you close the Filter.
