It’s been working great since the review. Make sure you read the review to know what to expect, though.

Comment on GL.iNet GL-BE3600 Slate 7 Review (vs. ASUS RT-BE58 Go): A Multi-Gigabit-Ready, Privacy-Ambiguous Travel Router by Dong Ngo https://dongknows.com/gl-inet-gl-be3600-slate-7-review/#comment-73614 Tue, 17 Mar 2026 08:03:25 +0000 https://dongknows.com/?p=139189#comment-73614 In reply to John_9.

Linux is open source software and while it’s fun, it’s hard to review computers running this type of OS because of many different reasons, such as baseline and consistency. Similarly, you don’t compare cars or motorcycles that have already been modded or heavily retrofitted with aftermarket parts.

Have you considered a different brand? Like the Ubiquiti UX7?

Yes, OK, fair enough on the GL.iNet routers. I will think about it and try and do some more reading.

Is there any other cheaper Asus routers you’d recommend? I mostly just want something that has at least 1 x 2.5Gbit WAN port and 1 x 2.5Gbit LAN port, and then apart from that, VPN Fusion.

I’m a little confused on the Linux analogy as I’ve only just started using it (installed one of the versions on another hard drive to see how it is compared to Windows), so I’m not quite understanding what you meant with that. Not sure if you can explain the Linux analogy another way?

My general issue with GL.iNet, John, is that it doesn’t make its own routers because it has no operating system. By using an open firmware, it kinda releases itself from issues and, with that, credits. There’s a reason why nobody really reviews computers running Linux. It’s just not possible to actually evaluate since there’s no way to know how things will pan out, who to blame or attribute the credits.

For this reason, it’s kinda irresponsible for me to recommend or don’t recommend GL.iNet because the truth is nobody knows. What I can tell you, though, is that you get what you pay for.

Not sure if you will review any other GL.iNet routers in the future, but I was looking at maybe buying the Flint 2 as it’s much, much cheaper than the routers I am interested in (Asus RT-BE86U or BE88U). Unfortunately, I can’t afford the Asus models I listed as pricing here for those is quite high, but I need something better to replace my AC68U.

Not sure what you think of something like the Flint 2 as AliExpress tend to have sales on it quite often, I was thinking of buying it next time it’s on sale. Would you say the Flint 2 would be a good step up on the RT-AC68U, or should I look at sticking with a cheaper Asus model if possible?

The Alien is great! I just played with mine a bit while testing the Dream Router 5G Max—review coming up soon. But yes, with UniFi the way it is, AmpliFi is no longer applicable.

Synology is great with NAS, and their routers are also excellent. However, it seems they’ve given up on networking. We’ll see.
