omgggggg that was the cough that wouldn't leave, urgh.

Let's see...
- whirlwind week of interviewing 3 candidates was horrible, but we have actually successfully hired 2 of them, and I'm pretty excited!
- then it was a week where Miss R got sick about halfway through the week, which threw everything off-balance. I was coughing a bit and descending into illness, but it was also the weekend of the comics pop-up so I just kind of .... pushed through it.... which is ultimately not great, because this week I really should have just called out from work, but instead I dragged myself into school and taught my classes while hacking my lungs out, yay. (I was masked and made sure to stay 6+ feet distant, and I only had to teach 3 classes, so it's actually not *that* bad. And I stayed in my car in-between classes so that I wouldn't infect anyone.) Wed-Friday was parent teacher conferences on Zoom, which was its own flavor of miserable, but at least I wasn't infecting anyone, and I did get to catch up on some work on Thursday. Friday afternoon (yesterday?!!) was when I finally started feeling better and getting energy back. And Miss R finally felt good enough to go back to school after missing 9 days, so ... yay!
- Just in time for the resumption of Chinese school today, and tomorrow Miss R has a joint minecraft-themed birthday party! Wow she is entering the double digits!!! I printed a bunch of minecraft block textures at work and last night I made some minecraft cubes (crafting table, furnace, cake, and chest).

Spouse is awesome and has made a Creeper piñata :)

So tomorrow is the big party!

Gotta remember to do tomorrow morning:
- make Minecraft cake
- buy candy to fill into Creeper
- maybe buy some chips/salsa? uncertain
- maybe buy some gluesticks and tape?
- disambiguate and put colored cubes in bags?

Gotta remember to bring:
- tape!!!
- boxes, made
- boxes, raw
- scissors and maybe exacto knife. ruler
- markers for folks who want to draw directly on the boxes
- cake!
- creeper!
- bandana for piñata hitting
- picnic blanket or tablecloth
- foods and snaxxx (cheese balls, chips & salsa)

Oh, I finished the Community Center in Stardew Valley on Year 2 Summer day 10, so now.... I've got nothing to do except to wait for Grandpa's approval, I guess. (I'm so disinterested in the late-game stuff lbr)

OMG Charlotte Stant's fic is SO FUCKING GOOD! Heaven is a Bedroom - Shane's a mormon missionary door-knocking with his fellow-elder Hayden and Ilya and Marley are roommates living in a house on their route. It's funny, incredibly hot, poignant and the most incredible complete AU, just wonderful writing. I want to have this fic's babies.

Rated: M
Content Warning: The big three are non-con, sex pollen, power imbalance. See the tags for the full list of CW. <3

I'm SO HAPPY guys, I haven't written fic in so long and certainly not with this enthusiasm! I have two more fics about halfway finished, and a lil plot summary (there is no real plot) for a fourth one. It's been a VERY long time since I've been like this. It's SUCH a nice place to back in. Especially for written porn, gosh. Apparently all I needed with a horrible dead lizard man. <3 Although not everything I'm working on features Victor Gideon. Just...half of it. XD;

I also went through and locked all of my fic to AO3 logged in users only. I had it so only logged in users could comment but then decided, nah. If you can't comment, you don't get to read! Sorry, not sorry, normies who go to consume fic on A03, don't comment, but then talk about it on tiktok or whatever. :P

(fandom has become so big, so present, so known, and I hate it hate it hate it)

EDIT: And a fifth one! \o/!

I binged the entirety of Deadloch season 2 on Prime today. The kink in my neck is none too happy, but damn that is an excellent show. Written by the 2 Kates, starring Madeline Sami, mwa! <3

In that vein, would anyone have any recommendations for communities/websites etc where I could find some lovely sapphic imagery? I've the urge to explore some more Thasmin art... possibly due to the spoilers coming from Big Finish... I am not fussed on rating, I'll make it work.

onto the meme!

1. What was the reason you began a Dreamwidth or LiveJournal account (or both)?
I had friends on the SG1archive that were on Livejournal, and found it had a better community for the creative side of fandom than the forums. Joined LJ in 2007, mirrored DW as soon as I could get an invite, and finished up with my personal LJ when the Russians banned LGBTQI+2 content in 2017. I ran the [community profile] sg1_debrief  on both sites until the post dried up.

2. How many DW or LJ communities do you subscribe to?
49, though if anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to build on that. Drag me out of my shell!

3. Do you have a favourite community or one you check out often to see what's new?
Probably the icon communities, I love seeing everyone's amazing work. Back in the day I loved running the challenges on [community profile] event_horizons  because there were/are so few spaces where fic and art are respected equally, and running [community profile] sg_delights  as a safe space for mature fanart. I do try to check my reading list at least once a week, life just gets in the way!

4. How did you pick your user name?
An old tv and a teenage obsession with Latin?

5. If you could change your user name, would you?
Nah, it's been too long now. I'm just Mags...

6. If you have a LiveJournal, are you currently able to access it?
Surprisingly, I am. I have periodically popped in just to keep it active so folks there can still access my older works, etc.

7. Do you have any information about why one would be unable to access LiveJournal?
I remember Denise posted something a while back about them trying to restrict use to Russian users only and implementing a pay to play system so they could track citizen's online activity hence an influx of new DW users. How many of our governments are trying much the same, dressed up as 'think of the children' whilst supporting the orange pedo starting another war...

Apogee by OpalApparition - where Commander Shane Hollander and Flight Engineer Ilya Rozanov are stranded on the International Space Station and have to survive a solar storm. It's an amazing mix of hard science, detailed knowledge of the ISS, space program history, intense action/adventure, gripping drama, an incredibly repressed Shane, pining, jealous Ilya, incendiary sex in microgravity, and romance. The writing is extremely good - gripping, fluent, with great descriptive detail. It's the best complete AU in the fandom I've read so far. (50,348 words)

I'm very into everything by OpalApparition, especially Wolfbird - a regularly updating WIP featuring professional dom Ilya and extremely uptight hockey star Shane. Although the way they meet is a BDSM club, in fact the fic's largely not about that (although there are several extremely hot scenes). It's more about the two characters, as despite his in-control dom role at the club, Ilya's actually a complex mess, an illegal overstayer with a ruined knee after a disaster very early in his NHL career, and Shane is the profoundly repressed hockey-robot star he'd be if he'd never met Ilya as a teen. It's addictive, and, as above, beautifully written. (currently 170,925 words)

  1. What was the reason you began a Dreamwidth or LiveJournal account (or both)? I was reading Aragorn/Boromir fanfic on sites like Green Emeralds and The Fellowship and I followed the authors back to Livejournal, especially [personal profile] cruisedirector and [personal profile] ribby. I think Cruise might have given me the access codes for LJ. Then I bought a paid account in 2003. I came to Dreamwidth when it first started after Strikeout 2007 and posted both places for many years. In 2017, I deleted my original LJ and then a year later created a new one that has very minimal posting, never anything personal. I update it once a year to keep it going: [livejournal.com profile] raederle_of_an.

  2. How many DW or LJ communities do you subscribe to? On LJ, it's only 7 at the moment. And none of them seem to post except the [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. On DW, the number is 131.

  3. Do you have a favorite community or one you check out often to see what's new? I have divided the communities up into areas of interest using filters, so it depends on what I'm in the mood for. Right now, I'm most involved with [community profile] bookclub_dw as I'm modding that and trying to get it launched.

  4. How did you pick your user name? I originally wanted it to be 'Raederle' for my favorite fictional female character but that was already taken, so I tried 'Moonheart' for a beloved book, but that was also taken, so I substituted 'selene' for 'moon' and came up with Seleneheart. I didn't think about doing Raederle-of-An until much later.

  5. If you could change your user name, would you? Eh, probably not at this point. Between LJ and DW, it's been 'seleneheart' for 23 years.

  6. The following bonus questions are brought to you by the fact that I ([personal profile] anais_pf) have been unable to access any page of LiveJournal for more than a week (and therefore cannot post to The Friday Five there):

  7. If you have a LiveJournal, are you currently able to access it?
    Yes.

  8. Do you have any information about why one would be unable to access LiveJournal?
    I don't know - Russian shenanigans?

As usual, true scholars, please forgive my dilettante's sense of discovery over things you have always known.

When searching for some examples of "pleasing the heart" as erotic joy, as per [personal profile] sovay's information, I arrived at this (in the ETCSL).

1. Well, a balbale, but the immediate internet is of limited use in defining this except as a form that uses variety in repetition.

2. For those interested, the transliterated Sumerian given for this phrase is dcu-dsuen cag4 dmu-ul-lil2-la2-ke4 ba-ze2-be2-en-na-ju10.

I assume the subscript numbers refer to different versions of the cuneiform character. I dunno about the superscript d.

Just curious, does anyone else here use the site 4thewords with their writing?

For those who don't know what 4thewords is, it's a site that makes writing a game basically. You have a character you can make, level up, gets clothes/hair/etc for. Along with quests that require defeating monsters that you need to write a certain word count in a certain time limit.

I've been using the site for years and I adore it.

90 discussion questions. 1. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

There are so many places! If I'm imagining myself being as physically limited as I am now - whereby I find walking difficult for more than about half an hour at best - then a cruise might be best.

I would like to cruise up the Danube and see the painted churches of Romania. But then again I would also like to cruise down the Nile and see Luxor. I could take a few lessons with Egyptian Raqs Sharqi teachers and get a new outfit while I was there.

If, on this imaginary trip, I'm also imagining myself as physically fit again, I'd like to go to Mexico and see what remains of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. Or perhaps to Peru to visit Machu Picchu

Alternatively, my son would like to go to Japan, so perhaps I would use my imaginary trip to take him there.

pengilly: Cure star smiling and winking (precure)

After learning there was a lot more to the Precure franchise than the two series that got English dubs, I've been on a quest to find the ideal Precure for me. I read a few Reddit threads that felt a bit vague in their recommendations, then I watched a video where a woman was recommending Precures based on their tones and story elements.

The Gigantic franchise that's "Impossible" to Recommend by doreimani

I was midway through, but I got a little impatient, and decided to look at the Precure wiki to see a full list of Precure season summaries to see which ones jumped out at me. It was a well-made video though. I'll have to keep watching it later, and see what else I can find.

I saw Star Twinkle Precure a bit further down the wiki's list, and one thing that stuck out at me was its space motifs and 80s inspired bright aesthetics. I really loved the old mecha shows from the 80s and 90s, and that vibe in general, so I was immediately intrigued.

I watched the first episode of it the other day. I liked it so much, I figured I should write my thoughts on it now while my first impression is still fresh! (I had watched a bit of Princess Precure, I may have to give my thoughts on that one as well).

It focuses on Hikaru, a teenage girl who loves astronomy. She accidentally summons an alien when she draws a constellation in her magic notebook. which sets off a chain of events that leads her into outer space to protect the creature, and become a legendary Precure!

There was a fair bit of high-pitched screaming/squealing in the first few minutes of the first episode, when the cute magical sidekick, in typical anime fashion, slams into the protagonist's head. There's some more of that sprinkled throughout the episode, but it didn't feel too excessive. And if you can get past that, it looks like a very promising show! I love how it leans heavily into sci-fi elements while still having unapologetically girly, cute aesthetics. Both appeal to me, but it feels rare for shows to combine the two.

In addition to being bright and engagingly animated, the theme song is also an absolute banger! I've had it playing on loop, alternating between other Precure songs for the past few days!

screencap of all four girls in the Star Twinkle Precure team during the theme song

If you find realistically written preteens annoying, this probably isn't the Precure for you. Though Hikaru (the main character) was a little annoying, for me it was in an endearing way. Her exuberant energy and nerdishness reminded me of myself when I was around her age.

Though it's clear the showrunners care more about her characterization than flattening her into a pure "genki girl". You see Hikaru stopping for about a minute to speak with her parents, even bowing when told to, so you can see that she does have a more respectful side to her.

I also loved the way she didn't freak out when meeting the aliens, but instead geeked out. Even at the villains! You could just tell she had been waiting for something like this to happen her entire life. The fact that this is exactly what I would have done at that age in that scenario! The more I watch the episode to grab screencaps for this review, the more I see that she's practically a self-insert of myself from my preteen years, help!

Though I like Hikaru, it's hard to say who my true favorite character is yet, as I usually only decide my favorite character after I've had time to see what each character contributes to the plot.

But I did like that poor jellyfish alien! When Lala (alien girl Hikaru meets) was too shy or surprised to say anything to counter Hikaru's recklessness, he had to step in. Or at least do his level best.

Fuwa is especially cute too. Perhaps my sense of humor is broken or irony poisoned or something, because during the flashback, when those older-looking Precures told the little puffball alien that she was "their last hope", and she was just like:

...

Fuwa? (A cute, blushy sheep face kaomoji)

I burst out laughing!

I dunno. Maybe "Fuwa" is my favorite. She is awfully cute. I was literally almost tearing up from how adorable she was when Hikaru was teasing her with the donut she was eating. Her increasingly delighted squeaks as Hikaru kept moving the donut closer to her face...they just have to be heard to be believed. Maybe she'll turn out to be the god of the home planet, or a secret monarch the whole time, or something funny like that.

Fuwa is on top of Hikaru's head. Hikaru holds a donut up at the former's eye level, jerking it back and forth, making Fuwa look at it.
