Leaving Apple & Google: Data Privacy Day: Why online tracking should concern us all

Today is Data Privacy Day — a moment dedicated to raising awareness about how personal data is collected, shared, and used online.

You may already know that your smartphone constantly tracks you. And chances are, you’ve clicked “Accept all cookies” more than once while thinking, “I don’t care — I have nothing to hide.” But the reality is more complex, and more concerning, than it seems.

Today, we’d like to take a closer look at why online tracking is harmful, and how the data you share with your phone every day can impact your privacy, your freedom, and even your security — often in ways you don’t expect.

On this Data Privacy Day, take a moment to learn why your data matters — and what you can do to protect it.

Read the recent article from Murena and share it with your friends and loved ones.

Leaving Apple & Google: Wrapping up the year 2025 with /e/OS and Murena https://e.foundation/leaving-apple-google-wrapping-up-the-year-2025-with-e-os-and-murena/ Tue, 30 Dec 2025 15:28:19 +0000 https://e.foundation/?p=23577

Leaving Apple & Google: Wrapping up the year 2025 with /e/OS and Murena

As 2025 comes to a close, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on what has been an exciting and meaningful year for the /e/OS and Murena community. Thanks to your continued support, this year marked major progress toward our shared mission: making privacy-respecting technology a new normal.

But before we wrap up...

Consider donating to e Foundation. There is no better time in the year to donate rather than now. All of the progress we made this year was possible thanks to our community that believes in digital freedom.

Help us continue building independent, open, and privacy-respecting technology. Your support directly fuels development, partnerships, and advocacy for a fairer, sovereign and ethical digital world.

/e/OS 3.0: a major milestone

This year saw the release of /e/OS 3.0 packed with new features such as enhanced Parental Control, upgraded Advanced Privacy tools, Find My Device via SMS and the Tablet Mode, designed to give you even more control over your digital life. The new version represents countless hours of work focused on delivering a smooth and user-friendly mobile experience you can truly trust.

Stronger Software Partnerships

In 2025, we deepened our commitment to ethical digital services through key partnerships:

  • With CryptPad to introduce Murena Vault. This feature allows users to store sensitive files with end-to-end encryption—including for real-time editing and collaboration. This new test service helps explore how ultra-strong encryption can be integrated into the Murena ecosystem with minimal impact on user experience.
  • With Qwant to introduce our Murena Find, our privacy-respecting search experience with efficient search results.

We are extremely thankful for collaboration to our new partners and are sure that this is how we build difference in the industry, by joining forces and knowledge.

Expanding Ethical Hardware

On the hardware side, 2025 was equally impactful:

  • The launch of the Murena Fairphone (Gen 6), the best combination of a modern and sustainable phone with privacy brought by /e/OS.
  • A new Murena product in collaboration with SHIFT – Murena SHIFTphone 8, expanding your choice in ethical, sustainable smartphones from Europe.
  • And a look ahead to an upcoming privacy-focused phone with HIROH with kill switches, which we’re excited to share even more about soon.

We are truly proud of these products as we believe that the combination of an ethical operating system and ethical hardware is what a fair world needs.

As we head into 2026, we’re more motivated than ever. Thank you for being part of this journey and for standing with us in making a shift towards a better technology.

Warm regards,

/e/OS & Murena Team

OTA update restored for a set of devices

Following the storage infrastructure outage that happened in late 2024 and early 2025, some OTA updates were not available anymore for a set of devices, making them impossible to update.

OTA updates for /e/OS have been fixed for some of these affected models, thus making them possible to upgrade again to more recent versions of /e/OS.If you have one of these devices, please update to the latest /e/OS version available. Here the list of the devices that can be updated from older versions of /e/OS :

  • Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge
  • Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+
  • Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+
  • Fairphone 3
  • Fairphone 4
  • Google Pixel 5

Go to Settings => Updater to find and apply the latest available updates.

We are currently working to make it possible for OnePlus Nord, Teracube 2e and Murena One that remain affected by this issue.

See the full list of compatible devices here.

Have you heard the news? Fairphone has just released their 2024 Impact Report — and it’s more than just a report. It’s a blueprint for building a fairer, more sustainable tech industry.

Some key achievements from 2024:

  • 48% fewer emissions
  • 20,000+ people working under fairer conditions
  • 29 tons of e-waste collected
  • 69.5% of materials in our newest phone are fair or recycled

These aren’t just impressive stats — they’re proof that ethical tech isn’t a dream for the future. It’s already happening.

We’re proud to collaborate with Fairphone by pairing their groundbreaking hardware with our privacy-respecting, ethical operating system.

Desktop Mode feature: we need your opinion

Do you think /e/OS should add a Desktop Mode user interface?

Imagine connecting your smartphone or tablet to an external screen and seamlessly picking up right where you left off—effortless productivity on a bigger screen, with keyboard and mouse connected if you want.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this idea!

Replacing Mozilla Location Service, share your thoughts!

Last year, Mozilla stopped to operate their widely used network location service “Mozilla Location Service”. In order to ensure a continuity of service in /e/OS, we have replaced it by an anonymizer proxy service of our own to the HERE network location service.

Since then, a few initiatives have started to provide alternatives to the Mozilla Location Service and we are considering switching to one of them called “BeaconDB”.

It can already be tested in recent /e/OS builds!

We’d love to hear from /e/OS users’ experience about it!

If you are interested in testing and evaluating it, please join our forum discussion.

Murena signs Euro-Stack to build a sovereign digital infrastructure

We are excited to share an important initiative that Murena is proud to support—Euro-Stack. This initiative brings together a coalition of nearly 100 European tech and digital businesses, including us, in a united effort to build a sovereign digital infrastructure for Europe.

What is Euro-Stack?

Euro-Stack is a movement aimed at reducing Europe’s reliance on non-European digital suppliers. This initiative advocates for building a strong, independent digital ecosystem within Europe, covering everything from cloud infrastructure to connectivity, platforms, and beyond. The goal is to create an environment that supports digital sovereignty, enhances security, and boosts productivity across the continent.

At Murena & e Foundation, we believe in Europe’s potential to lead the way in building a sovereign and sustainable digital future. By supporting Euro-Stack, we are contributing to a collective effort to ensure that Europe is at the forefront of digital innovation.

5 Reasons to Protect Your Privacy on Mobile Phones: Why Data Privacy Matters https://e.foundation/5-reasons-to-protect-your-privacy-on-mobile-phones-why-data-privacy-matters/ Mon, 27 Jan 2025 22:44:51 +0000 https://e.foundation/?p=21139

5 Reasons to Protect Your Privacy on Mobile Phones: Why Data Privacy Matters

In today’s digital world, smartphones have become an essential part of our daily lives. From messaging to shopping, socializing, and working, our phones are central to our activities. However, what many of us don’t realize is that these devices also track, collect, and share vast amounts of personal data. On Data Privacy Day, it’s important to remember why protecting your privacy on your mobile device is crucial. As a company committed to providing deGoogled operating systems and smartphones, we understand the value of privacy and want to help you take back control of your data.

Here are five key reasons to prioritize your privacy on mobile phones:

1. Your Data Is a Goldmine

In the age of data-driven businesses, your personal information is more valuable than you might think. Big Tech companies, such as Google, Facebook, and others, make billions by collecting, analyzing, and selling your data. Your location, browsing habits, search history, and even private conversations are all used to create detailed profiles that help advertisers target you more effectively. This often happens without your knowledge, and sometimes even without your consent.

For example, when you use a free service or app on your phone, you’re often paying with more than just your time: you’re paying with your personal data. Consider how many times you’ve received ads that seem eerily relevant to a conversation or a website you visited recently. This is not coincidence; it’s the result of data tracking that sells your attention to the highest bidder.

By using a privacy-focused phone, like a deGoogled device, you reduce the amount of personal data being collected and shared without your consent.

2. Avoid Targeted Manipulation

Modern technology is designed to keep you engaged — sometimes to the point of manipulation. With the vast amounts of data collected from your mobile phone, companies can predict your behavior and influence your decisions. Whether it’s encouraging you to make impulse buys or shaping your political views, your digital footprint can be used to nudge you toward certain actions.

Take, for instance, social media platforms. They use algorithms to track what you engage with most, and then curate a feed designed to keep you scrolling. This is often based on personal data — including your likes, comments, and the content you’ve shared. The more you interact, the more they learn about your preferences, and the more they influence your behavior.

By maintaining your privacy on your phone, you protect yourself from this kind of manipulation. When you use a phone that prioritizes privacy, you prevent algorithms from shaping your choices and opinions.

3. Prevent Identity Theft

Cybercriminals target phones for sensitive data, including personal details and financial information. Consider the number of high-profile data breaches that have occurred over the years. The personal data of millions of individuals — including email addresses, phone numbers, and sometimes even financial information — has been exposed in security breaches. Once this information falls into the wrong hands, it can be used for fraudulent activities like opening bank accounts in your name or making unauthorized purchases.

4. Freedom from Surveillance

Smartphones constantly collect data on your movements, habits, and preferences.

Even when you’re not using apps, they can still collect data in the background, sending information to third-party companies. This kind of surveillance infringes on your personal freedom and can make you feel like you’re constantly being watched. Whether it’s the government, advertisers, or hackers, your phone can become an instrument of constant surveillance.

By using a deGoogled phone, you prevent unnecessary tracking, protecting your freedom and privacy from constant monitoring by third parties.

Advanced Privacy tool in /e/OS cuts in-app trackers, hides your geolocation and your IP address

5. Privacy Is Your Right

Privacy is a fundamental human right that shouldn’t be sacrificed for convenience. Sadly, in the current tech ecosystem, privacy is often seen as a luxury. But it doesn’t have to be. No one should be forced to give up their privacy in exchange for a device or service.

Take Control of Your Privacy Today

This Data Privacy Day, take the first step toward reclaiming your privacy and protecting your personal data.
