Understanding Anticipation: When Waiting Shapes Our Feelings

Navigating the In-Between with the EMBRACE PROJECT Squad 🌱

Anticipation is a natural part of growing up. Waiting for what comes next can bring excitement, hope, and curiosity, but also worry, tension, and impatience. Whether a child is waiting for a birthday, a school trip, exam results, or a parent to come home, the “in-between” moments can be emotionally intense.

As part of the EMBRACE PROJECT #KnowEmotions campaign, we explore emotions through the lens of psychologist Robert Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions, where anticipation plays a key role in helping children imagine the future, prepare for what is coming, and cope with uncertainty. On the wheel, anticipation sits opposite to distraction. This reminds us that waiting requires attention, emotional awareness, and often support from others.

Why Anticipation Matters for Well-being

Research shows that anticipation is closely connected to well-being and mental health. Anticipating positive events can strengthen motivation, build hope, and increase positive emotions. Neuroscience studies suggest that when people look forward to positive experiences, brain areas linked to emotional regulation and well-being become more active. In simple terms, imagining something good in the future can already make us feel better in the present.

At the same time, anticipation is not always comfortable. Waiting can activate uncertainty and stress. Children may feel restless, worried, or impatient when they do not know what will happen next. For some, especially those who struggle with anxiety, anticipation of future events can become overwhelming. This is why learning to recognize and name anticipation as an emotion is so important. When children understand what they are feeling while waiting, they gain more control over how they respond.

Anticipation in Everyday Life

In daily life, anticipation appears in many small moments:

  • waiting for a celebration, holiday, or special visit
  • waiting for feedback, test results, or an important decision
  • waiting to speak in class or try something new
  • waiting for routines to change, such as moving to a new school or class

These moments can trigger mixed emotions at the same time. A child might feel excited and nervous, hopeful and worried. Helping children notice this emotional mix builds emotional literacy and supports healthier coping strategies.

Watch our EMBRACE animation on anticipation:

English: https://youtu.be/Xa8NaruPbx4

Romanian: https://youtu.be/l7S92nzF7hI

When adults acknowledge that waiting can be emotionally challenging, children feel seen and supported. Simple strategies can help:

  • naming the feeling (“It sounds like you’re feeling excited and nervous at the same time”)
  • offering structure and predictability (“This is what will happen next”)
  • using calming techniques such as breathing or grounding
  • creating small positive moments while waiting

These small steps support children in developing emotional regulation skills that are valuable far beyond the moment of waiting.

Why Emotional Literacy Matters

Emotional literacy begins with awareness. When children learn to recognize anticipation, they become better equipped to cope with uncertainty, manage expectations, and stay emotionally balanced in changing situations. Over time, this supports resilience, confidence, and well-being.

By promoting emotional literacy, participatory learning, and resilience, the EMBRACE PROJECT supports children, families, and educators in navigating emotions connected to waiting, change, and uncertainty.

Why Skills Alone Are Not Always Enough

When discussing barriers to employment, the conversation often focuses on skills, education, or work experience. While these factors are important, another challenge affects many job seekers across Europe: confidence.

Many capable individuals hesitate to apply for jobs because they feel uncertain about their qualifications or worry they do not fully meet the requirements. This hesitation can prevent talented people from even entering the hiring process.

Why Confidence Matters in the Hiring Process

Modern hiring processes often happen quickly. Recruiters and hiring managers may review dozens or even hundreds of applications in a short time. In these situations, subtle signals such as communication style, certainty, and self-presentation can influence how candidates are perceived.

Psychologists describe a phenomenon sometimes called the confidence heuristic. When someone speaks with certainty, others are more likely to assume they are competent. In fast-paced decision environments, confidence can become a shortcut for judging readiness.

This does not mean employers intentionally favor overconfidence. Instead, time pressure and limited information often lead people to rely on signals that feel easier to interpret.

As a result, candidates who communicate with assurance may move forward quickly, while others who are equally capable but more cautious may remain overlooked.

The Hidden Impact of Self-Doubt

For many job seekers, especially those changing careers or returning to the workforce, this dynamic can create a cycle of hesitation.

If people believe they must meet every requirement before applying, they may decide not to apply at all. Over time, this can widen the gap between perceived readiness and actual capability.

Breaking this cycle requires more than simply encouraging people to “be more confident.” Instead, individuals need tools that help them reflect on their skills, recognize their strengths, and track their personal development.

Building Confidence Through Reflection

One way to support job seekers is through structured self-assessment tools that help individuals better understand their abilities and motivations.

Within the DIAMOND Empower, partners across Europe are developing the ᴱGROW Index, a tool designed to support employability and career development.

The ᴱGROW Index helps individuals:

  • reflect on their skills and strengths
  • monitor their motivation levels
  • set realistic career goals
  • track personal progress over time

By making progress visible, tools like the ᴱGROW Index can help people recognize that they are already developing the skills needed for new opportunities.

Confidence as Part of Career Development

Confidence does not appear overnight. It grows gradually as individuals gain clarity about their abilities and see evidence of their progress.

In a changing labor market where career paths are rarely linear, supporting confidence can be just as important as developing technical skills.

Because sometimes the biggest barrier to a new opportunity is not a lack of talent.

Sometimes, it is simply the belief that we are ready.

Why Breathing Helps Children Manage Stress

The Science Behind Butterfly Breathing

Breathing is something we do automatically every day, yet it plays an important role in how we feel, think, and respond to stress.

For children and teenagers, strong emotions such as anxiety, frustration, or overwhelm can make breathing faster and shallower. When this happens, the body may remain in a state of tension, making it harder for young people to calm down and focus.

Learning simple breathing techniques can help children slow down their breathing and support emotional regulation.

One of the easiest ways to introduce this idea is through playful exercises like Butterfly Breathing.

How Breathing Affects the Body

Breathing is closely connected to the nervous system (the system that controls how the body reacts to stress and relaxation).

When we are stressed, the body activates what scientists call the sympathetic nervous system, often known as the “fight-or-flight” response. This causes faster breathing, increased heart rate, and physical tension.

Slow, deep breathing can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for calming the body.

Research shows that diaphragmatic breathing, also called deep belly breathing, can support this calming process.

The diaphragm, a large muscle involved in breathing, performs around 80% of the body’s breathing work. When breathing is slow and deep, the diaphragm moves more effectively, helping the body relax and regulate important functions such as heart rate and blood pressure.

Studies also suggest that breathing exercises can help reduce stress, improve emotional well-being, and even support better concentration and learning outcomes in children and adolescents.

In some research studies involving young people, breathing exercises and related relaxation techniques were linked to improvements in:

  • stress levels
  • emotional wellbeing
  • school performance
  • family relationships

These findings highlight how simple breathing practices can support both mental and physical health.

Why Breathing Exercises Help Children

Children are still learning how to recognize and manage their emotions. Because of this, strong feelings can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Breathing exercises provide a simple and accessible tool children can use when they feel nervous, upset, or overstimulated.

They help children:

  • slow down when emotions feel intense
    • focus their attention
    • reconnect with their bodies
    • develop healthy self-regulation skills

When introduced in a positive and engaging way, breathing exercises can become a natural part of everyday routines.

Butterfly Breathing: A Simple Technique for Children

One breathing exercise used in the EMBRACE Future project is called Butterfly Breathing.

This technique helps children practice slow breathing using imagination and movement.

Here’s how it works using the image:

🦋 Start at the bottom of the butterfly and move clockwise to the right.

  • Inhale – count to 4
  • Hold – count to 4
  • Exhale – count to 4
  • Hold – count to 4

Repeating this exercise for several breaths can help children slow their breathing and relax their bodies.

Because the exercise uses a simple visual image, it is especially helpful for younger children who may find abstract explanations about emotions more difficult to understand.

How the EMBRACE Project Uses Breathing Techniques

The EMBRACE project promotes emotional literacy and resilience in children and teenagers through educational activities designed for schools.

Breathing exercises are included as part of these learning modules.

In elementary school activities, educators introduce techniques like Butterfly Breathing through playful exercises that help children understand how breathing affects their feelings.

In middle school modules, students learn more about how breathing techniques can help calm the nervous system and support emotional balance during stressful moments.

By practicing these techniques regularly, young people can develop practical tools they can use throughout their lives.

Small Tools Can Make a Big Difference

Managing emotions is an important life skill that develops over time. Simple practices like breathing exercises can give children a starting point for understanding how their bodies and emotions are connected.

Butterfly Breathing is a reminder that sometimes the most effective tools for emotional well-being are also the simplest.

With regular practice, breathing techniques can help children feel calmer, more focused, and better prepared to handle everyday challenges.

How to Manage Anticipation

Anticipation is a fundamental human emotion. It helps us plan, prepare, and imagine what lies ahead. From everyday responsibilities to major life events, anticipation allows us to organize our actions and stay motivated.

Within Robert Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions, anticipation sits opposite surprise. While surprise prepares us to react to the unexpected, anticipation prepares us to get ready. Both emotions play an important role in emotional development and resilience.

Tips:

When Anticipation Becomes Overwhelming

Anticipation becomes challenging when it shifts into over-anticipation. This happens when thoughts about the future feel constant, intrusive, or focused on worst-case scenarios. Research shows that over-anticipation is often driven by fear and uncertainty, especially when outcomes feel tied to self-worth or security.

Over time, this heightened mental state can lead to stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and burnout, even in people who appear highly responsible or successful.

Recognizing the Difference

One of the most effective ways to distinguish healthy anticipation from over-anticipation is to notice how thinking about the future feels. Calm focus and determination signal healthy anticipation. Persistent fear, tension, or overwhelm may indicate that the nervous system is on high alert.

Research-Based Ways to Manage Anticipation

Evidence suggests that managing anticipation becomes easier when we:

  • Increase awareness of thoughts and emotions
  • Build self-efficacy by recalling past coping successes
  • Practice self-compassion and reduce harsh self-criticism
  • Use grounding and mindfulness techniques to return to the present

These tools help reduce perceived threat and restore trust in our ability to cope with uncertainty.

Read in Romanian:

A Balanced Perspective

Anticipation is not something to eliminate. It is a natural part of being human. The goal is not to “fix” anticipation, but to balance it, allowing it to guide preparation without overwhelming emotional well-being.

Through the EMBRACE Future PROJECT, we support emotional literacy by helping individuals understand emotions like anticipation and use them in healthy, supportive ways.

DigiCreate Research Results Presented on TV7 Morning Program

On Tuesday, March 3, Milica Dedić, Executive Director of Nevladina Organizacija GLAS (NVO GLAS), appeared on the morning show Za dobro jutro on TV7 Montenegro, hosted by Jelica Vujisić.

The appearance focused on presenting the results of the international Digicreate Empower  research study, conducted as part of the three-year Erasmus+ Digicreate Empower project implemented across Germany, Spain, Portugal, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.

The study examines the position of young people in the cultural and creative industries (CCI), their readiness for the digital labor market, and the skills needed for professional development.

Mapping the Position of Young Creatives

The main goal of the research was to map the current position of young people working in the cultural and creative industries, identify the main barriers they face, and assess the potential for developing an online training program.

The study included:

  • 701 survey respondents across the partner countries
    205 respondents from Montenegro
6 national focus groups with a total of 90 participants
    A comprehensive feasibility analysis

The results were compiled into a 125-page publication in English, which will serve as the foundation for the development of the Digicreate Empower training program.

Key Challenges Identified by the Research

The findings show that young people working in the creative sector face several significant challenges.

One of the most important findings is that 40.8% of respondents reported having no previous work experience in the cultural and creative industries.

Many of those who are employed are still in the early and unstable stages of their careers, often working under temporary or insecure conditions.

The research also highlights broader structural challenges, including:

  • Financial insecurity and unstable contracts
A lack of practical and industry-specific skills
Limited institutional support for young creatives
Difficult transitions from education into stable careers

In Montenegro specifically, another challenge is the limited social recognition of creative professions, as well as the fact that only a small number of young people can rely on creative work as their primary source of income.

Digital Readiness and Skills Development

Despite these challenges, the research shows that young creatives demonstrate high motivation to develop digital skills, particularly in areas such as:

  • Digital content creation
    Managing a digital identity

However, advanced technical and entrepreneurial skills remain limited, particularly in countries in the Western Balkans.

The research also identified a significant gap between formal education and labor market needs.

While educational programs provide theoretical knowledge, they often lack practical training and entrepreneurial skill development needed for success in the creative industries.

Developing the Digicreate Empower Online Training Program

As a response to these findings, NVO GLAS plans to develop a Digicreate Empower online training program aimed at supporting young creatives in building the skills needed for the digital economy.

The training will:

  • last five days
    • be delivered online
    • focus on interactive learning and group work
    • include practical assignments and digital tools
    • provide mentorship support

The program will place a strong emphasis on inclusivity, with particular attention given to the participation of young people from marginalized groups.

Strengthening the Future of Creative Industries

During the interview, Milica emphasized that improving the position of young people in the cultural and creative industries requires shared responsibility among institutions, educational systems, and the creative sector.

However, she also stressed the important role of the state in connecting education systems, labor market policies, and digital development strategies.

Without coordinated support, there is a risk of losing young creative talent and slowing the development of the creative sector in Montenegro and the region.
