Earl20 https://earl20.com Listening to music is living, making music is dreaming. It’s a game made to help you learn about fallacies and practice your knowledge with a quiz. It was made by my friend Tim Krief and it’s available on Steam.

Tim asked me to make soundtracks for him a while ago. He was clear about it, something calm and cosy, I think I did a good job on this one. It’s something very different from what I’m used to do but it was fun. I could practice on different rythms this time and new sounds. My favorite is the Main Title track, I really like the synth coming after the intro.

You can listen to the OST only on YouTube, I hope you enjoy!

Thank you for listening and see you soon on the next release.

Azuria album is out https://earl20.com/azuria-album-is-out/ Mon, 27 Jan 2025 22:11:51 +0000 https://earl20.com/?p=484 That’s it, my first album Azuria was released on January 10th, 2025, I hope you enjoy it. If you haven’t listened to it yet, you can play it on my Youtube channel and on some major streaming platforms (Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud and Deezer). You can also support me by getting the album on Bandcamp!

I’m happy to close this chapter of my music life. I think this album is more like my color palette and I just need to go further into creativity.

The making of this album

This album was made entirely in my home studio using this gear:

  • Laptop PC with Ableton 11
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 gen3 sound interface
  • AT2050 microphone
  • A pair of old Yamaha HS 50M
  • Yamaha PSR E433 keyboard

I also used some free/libre and opensource software for the sound and visual creations:

  • Virtual synthesizers:
    • Vital
    • Helm
    • Dexed
  • Godot Engine
  • Blender
  • Gimp

I started working on the album tracks back in 2021 right after discovering the virtual synth Vital. I’m impressed to realize that it’s my main choice of synth so far. I literally did every song of the album using at least one instance of this plugin. Almost all the bass sounds come from this synth and I did some drum sounds with it on Fly too.

I also tried vocoder plugins for the first time in the track Musique93. My favorite part of the track is at the end when the vocoder is blurred by the echo effect and the music kicks back progressively.

I used Ableton acoustic plugins for more natural strings, guitars and drums. The picked guitar string on Fly is actually one of those plugins.

For the rest, I just experimented with the plugins I have and I will continue to do so. I don’t feel the need for buying more tools for now, maybe some for mixing and mastering. I’m thinking now of a way to play my music outside so I might get some gear to do that.

Thank you for listening and see you soon.

I made music without crunching https://earl20.com/i-made-music-without-crunching/ Sat, 24 Dec 2022 18:00:03 +0000 https://earl20.com/?p=366 Dear listeners,

I recently joined the Crunchless Challenge hosted by Tim Krief to do some music. Now I’m happy to release a remix of Daft Punk’s The Prime Time of Your Life. It’s available on YouTube and SoundCloud for you to listen.

A little bit of storytime here

I had this idea of a bass I found while listening to the original song, it was sticking in my head so I decided to put it down and create a remix. At the same time the Crunchless Challenge started so it has been a great opportunity to join it. This challenge is originally made for game developers but actually you can do whatever you want with it, all you need is to set work sessions you have to follow without crunching. I decided to go with two hours per day. After ten days I finished the music.
I’m pretty happy with the sessions I’ve done, two hours per day were sufficient enough to take a step back on the song and especially the mix. I took the weekend off as well to clear my mind from the music and to have new ears when coming back to it.

In the end, it has been a success even if I took twice the time as the challenge recommended (five days). I sticked to the schedule I’ve made and I’m really happy about the result. I hope you will enjoy it as well.

New radio for Earl20

Don’t hesitate to check the new radio Tim Krief made for the website. It’s very practical for listening to my songs in the background. The interface he made is clean and stylish, check those cool animations in the title of the tab!

Thank you for following my creations, next year will be exciting, I have new music coming soon!

Merry Christmas everybody!
